• I’m trying to do an import from TypePad to WordPress, the import seems to work fine and says it was successful, however when I look at the posts, most have been cut off. It’s random, some cut off after 3 words but with others it’s more like 2 or 3 paragraphs before they stop. I think some may not be cut off at all, but it looks like the majority are.

I checked the original import file and the posts are all there, nothing is cut off, so I assume there is something wrong with the import script? Has anyone else experienced this, is there a way to fix it so it imports the full posts?

  • I’m guessing there is something in one or more of the posts bodys that confuses the importer. Any chance you have string of 5 hypens (or is it underscores?) as part of the content at the start of a line. That can cut off a post prematurely.

It could be something else so thats only a guess.

I looked more closely at the export file and the exact places that it was cutting posts off and they all turned out to be at apostrophes, quotation marks and dashes. I guess it was a different character encoding that the importer couldn’t read? Thank god for find and replace in my HTML editor or that would have been a tedious fix.

Still though, is this something that could be fixed more easily than having to edit all her entries from the import file? If I changed the character encoding setting in WP would that make the importer work correctly? (Although, I don’t really know how to find out what character encoding TypePad uses.) Just wondering for future reference.

Its a more confusing problem with multiple players (os, db, php/perl, MT and WP all have their idea of what they want for character encoding. The instructions strongly suggest to let WP default to UTF-8. Odds are high the the Typepad export is ISO-8859 (even worse, is Window variation of that)

There are programs that will convert character sets so you could run the whole import file thru them which is what I do when importing into WP from MT. ‘iconv’ if have linux or os x.
