I’m trying to import from my WP.com blog to a hosted blog.

I had no trouble exporting the XML file from WP.com, but when I try to import it, it imports up to a certain entry, but ignores the 20-30 most recent posts and pages. I checked, and those entries do show up in the XML file.

Also, multiple versions of one category and three sub-categories are created when I import—separate but identically-named categories are created for every entry in that category. In the case of the sub-categories, they become top-level categories.

Does anyone know what the problem is here? I’ll be so grateful for any help!

  • Just Guessing.

The easy question first. Maybe. Are they really identical categories names? WordPress filters what’s shown in the browser (which one are you using?) so it can be different characters in the DB tables or importer variables. Leading and Trailing spaces, international characters and so on. Only a guess on my part. It’s where I’d look.

I’ve seen the importer croak just as you have described. Once it goes ‘funny’, nothing good gets imported after that. It’s also remotely possible that the earlier categories mis-handling are causing the problem (running out of memory/resources perhaps). That’s the last problem to fix though and speculation on my part.

If you can nail down which post (and any comments on it) is the first to fail in those last 20-30, I suggest looking really hard at the XML for that one post and any comments attached. Sadly you do need to be XML savvy for that. Or php savvy. I’ve seen the importer die if the commenter entered a & in the comments.

If you have access to your new hosts error log you might find some other clues, or not. Let us know what you find.

Thanks—you were right on both counts.

After I read your response, I realized that all the categories that were giving me trouble were ones with ampersands in them. When I changes ‘&’ to ‘and’ and re-exported, it didn’t give me any more trouble.

The importer died because the <link> info for one of the images was screwed up somehow. I still don’t know what caused it, but it was easy enough to fix by hand.

Thanks again for your help, and your prompt reply!
