Why does my right side bar disappear when you click on "Read the rest of the story" (when you're taken to the full story)?

thats the way the default theme works. Single post pages, aka permalinks, which is exactly where you are taken after clicking the "more" link dont have a sidebar.
If you want a sidebar on your permalink pages, the best thing to do is use another theme.
