• I am very much a WP newcomer and am wanting to set up a new website using WP and would like to set up a competition to encourage people to register at my site.

I’d like some ideas on how to run a competition to do the following and if there are any WP mods out there that will allow this:

I’d like to run a contest where anyone who registers for a site in a certain time frame goes in the draw for a prize and when they register/enter they can nominate friends (supply their email) to register as well, automatically sends an email to nominated friends and when one of their friends registers they get an extra entry into the prize draw.

I’m sure a component that does this would be a worthy addition to the WP community as these type of contests are a great way for sites to build up a user base.

  • For most sites, User base means readership — not registered users, and most ordinary-readers don’t like to register, that’s been my experience. Out of curiosity, why do you want to get a bunch of registered users? Depending on your purpose – You might want to think about keeping Registration for the admins and writers mostly (opening Commenting to unregistered users in the options), and having a different form of Sign-Up or participation for your site, such as a newsletter or subscribe-me plugin, encouraging people to read your feeds, encouraging easy Commenting, and social bookmarks if you like. With purposes of generating Traffic, Readership, and Commenting/Participation. Maybe another way of looking at it.
