Hi,
A reader of my site recently used my username in a comment. I have setup my comments system to format the comment slightly differently if I or a select group of other users comment.
Initially the format was based on username but since the person impersonated me (Not with any malicious intent) I changed it to a secret email address.
However, it seems that anybody can simply use my or anybody else's username. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
TIA
Phillip
Ban the guy. Use .htaccess or wp-ban plugin.
Btw .. Wordpress 2.1.3 contains one exploit .. check google for fix.
Thank you for your reply. However, it's not really very helpful because it still won't stop other people from doing it.
The person in question did it once out of curiosity, seems a bit harsh to ban him.
Thanks for the tip about the exploit, I'll upgrade immediately.
Skippy's Impostercide plugin will stop people posting comments using the email address of a registered user. It's no longer supported, but it still works, and is available for download here:

It might be possible for someone who can code (ie not me!) to adapt this to match on usernames as well as, or instead of, email addresses.
That Impostercide plugin protects all three items from being used by anybody else: Username, Email, Website address.
Thank you, I'll look into the Impostercide plugin.
