Sorting posts by custom field in category archive

I’m making a wordpress site for a friend, and he wants to do Album Reviews. The thing is, he’d like the category page for the album views to sort them by the date the album was released (don’t ask), is there a way to do that with custom fields and maybe some SQL for a page template/category archive template?
