Support » Plugin: WordPress Backup to Dropbox » Dropbox Rate Limiting WPB2DB

  • I’m unable to back up to Dropbox using wpb2d it seems that dropbox is blocking the app.

Here’s the following error reported by your email notifications premium extension.

A fatal error occurred: Forbidden. Your app is making too many requests and is being rate limited. 503s can trigger on a per-app or per-user basis.

I was backing two small blogs of no more the 50MB each daily, this rapidly became intermittent, one would work the other wouldn’t, until they both stopped backing up completely. Since then nothing has worked.

This is a difficult one to tackle. I have never actually seen the issue in my development or testing.

Do you back up both blogs at the same time?

No they were at different times, in fact I’ve now set them up to back up weekly, spaced apart by several days but it seems as though the damage has been done, for now anyway… I have contacted Dropbox but still haven’t heard anything back it’s been over three weeks and counting.

I am successfully backing up and syncing via my iPhone, text expander and camera uploads but your app seems blocked, I’m at a loss myself too.

It’s an odd one, let me know if you hear back from Dropbox. I might reach out to them too.

I’m leaning towards it being a per-user rate limit because if it were per-app id expect a lot more support noise.

Are you using the latest version of the plugin?
Also, does it happen on every upload?

I can’t see how it would be per user as I’d never used Dropbox until I started using WPB2DB. Nothing else had been backed up until I’d switched on camera uploading and text expander syncing a couple of days ago.

One mysterious thing has happened, out of the two blogs I’m attempting to run one of them backed up in full! the first time since the 26th October, the other blog hasn’t backed up since the 15th October…

Yes I’m using the latest version of the plugin and apart from this one odd unexpected successful back up they fail to even get started.

Do you get the same issues with the latest version of the plugin?

One blog (www.zeropointstate.com) is working backing up off of a Rackspace CloudServer fine now.

But I still can no longer back up a clients site (www.eastwestmartialarts.org) from a 123 reg VPS configured with a PleskCP 11.09 running Unbuntu 10.0.4.1 (5.3.2-1ubuntu4.18) even on the latest update 1.4.3 WPB2DB doesn’t even create a directory either anymore.

I did have problems with both backing up as you know yet why one is working again I can’t for the life of me understand why, I did try to back-up the clients site (www.eastwestmartialarts.org) on another Dropbox account still with no luck…

Also never heard back from Dropbox (Which was helpful!)

Do you have many small files that need to be backed up?

    Thread Starter Martyn Haskins

    (@martyn1197)

Not particularly just a small standard wordpress install, with around 15 plugins a dozen pages or so, nothing out of the ordinary…

    (@michaeldewildt)

Is this still an issue with the latest version?

    Thread Starter Martyn Haskins

    (@martyn1197)

Still not working on the second blog I was talking about (two different servers), it just refuses to play ball on (www.eastwestmartialarts.org) it worked and now doesn’t, hasn’t worked since approximately October last year. It won’t even create a directory on dropbox for back up.

You certainly solved the supposed rate limiting issue as per email notification, which corrected the back up issues on one blog http://www.zeropointstate.com

A fatal error occurred: Forbidden. Your app is making too many requests and is being rate limited. 503s can trigger on a per-app or per-user basis.

Also on http://www.eastwestmartialarts.org I’ve also been able to kick start back-ups here too, I understand W3 Cache plugin was causing some issue with WPB2DB so I deactivated it then deleted it but the issue persisted. After some recent investigation I’d discovered that this plugin does not un-install cleanly it leaves some files behind…

It turns out these files were the culprits! Once I’d manually deleted these WPB2DB resumed backing up with out a hitch!

advanced-cache.php, db.php, w3tc/, w3-total-cache-config.php from wp-content/ in addition to wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/ I think this is all of them they may have been a w3-object-cahce too.
