I've just wasted *heaps* of time surfing the web for an open source, free classified ads script. Few have been worked on much in years, except Noah's Classifieds, which isn't completely free though.
Well it just stuck me -- wait a minute you idiot! -- you've just made a paypal plugin and a proximity locator plugin for WordPress... and WP comes with most of the other stuff you need to put together a nice Classified Ads app.
So here I am. Tired... And excited about the idea of hacking a script together tomorrow. Before I get started though, I wanted to ask: Has anyone done this already? Does anyone have any pointers, tips?
Many thanks,
Eoin
I haven't seen a hack that let someone run a classified ads site.
Wouldn't a simple forum be sufficient?
Using post-meta to store the zip code, or the equivalent and then searching within a range of that zip code to find the closest geographical results might be a good way to do it, perhaps.
Good luck :)
Eoin,
This is intriguing to me. I'd like to see what you come up with! I have some ideas for a local site that might benefit from such a feature.

It is probably a good reason why most classified ads systems haven't been worked on the last few years; here in Norway, and most of Europe, there are large national sites which has cornered the market for classifieds. In the US there are big ones like that auction site I just can't remember the name of...which seems to be taking a lot of the stuff as well.
There just isn't that much of a market, mostly. Though, classifieds are easy to do, and as you say, you have the parts you need, just sew them together in WordPress.

Any news on this? Sounds like a great idea for a plugin...I'm considering setting up WP as an intranet app for my company and this was a request.
so where's the paypal plugin?

I would really like to have a plugin to allow my visitors to post "Classified Ads" to my CoolCarGuy.com and SalesFreak.com websites. If one of these is available, please let me know. I think it would be a very popular plugin and I haven't been able to find one yet that works within WP. Thanks.
I'm interested in it, too.
What features would you like to see ?

Features I'd like to see (I'll come up with more later):
Register or not register to post
Approval before registering or not
Add items, title, description, images
Upload image (image size and qty restrictions)
Expiration date, or unlimited days
Contact seller
Category (multiple cat listing possible)
Approval required before posting, or not
kappaluppa,
Are we talking about the same thing ?

I'm not sure what you mean, Vaam.
I've listed features I'd like to see in a classified ads plugin.
What's the latest news, here?
Does a classified ads plugin exist?
I'd really like to see one. What
about Noah's Classifieds? Does this
work, within the Wordpress scheme?
Thanks.

Any developments with this yet? It'd be incredibly useful for a small community site.
BUMPBUMP Yes, I'd really be interested in this - surely there is some way, a simple listing fuction that could appear in write post page (if only I could do this!!)

I did find uPress, which is promising. http://blog.labnotes.org/2006/01/10/screencast-posting-events-with-wordpress-20/
However, I could not make it work that well. Does not provide any real notes on how to make it operate.
