Use any membership plugin to restrict content from public.

.htacess password is actually for limited usage, it might throw error for many setup. Biggest advantage of this Plugin is, you can track the IP of the users who wanted to force login.

Other method is to restrict is by IP. Disallow all except the server’s IP and the users static IP from .htaccess.
