How to Design a Fixed Layout for my blog?

Hello –
I have a 3 column layout that I would like to change because many of my viewers have problems viewing in browsers other than IE 6.
I would like to have more information or links on how to design fixed layouts such as wordlog.com or even this website itself.
If there is any information or code available please do let me know.

Thanks alot! Just a designer question, do you usually work on your web designing offline like in DreamWeaver or Frontpage and then move it online..or do you actually just make the changes online??

poons, whichever way works for you. Please avoid using frontpage, it has given me more problems over the years than it has helped simplify things. Dreamweaver is nice, but I use Crimson Editor(a text editor with wings) or I use vi on the server.

Neither. We hack about in notepad or some such and ftp it. If you save your index php as htm you can edit locally. You might want to install Firefox and the web dev kit as well.

I edit stuff in TextPad, which is the best editor I have ever encountered in 20 years of amateur hacking.
I am not a designer and don’t actually develop designs from scratch. What I do is start with someone else’s design and hack away at the CSS until I get what I want.

PSPad – it’s freeware, and you can get Topstyle Lite (good CSS program) from the same site too.

Yes.
TextPad does everything but wash the cat, but it’s not smug about it, like MS Word.

Yes i have TextPad installed on my PC. You are right its a great tool. I am a Consultant by trade but am interested in web designing. Designing a new layout for my blog is a great way to learn and get some practice for it.
I have been using Dreamweaver and Photoshop for my current pages but want to go towards the fixed layout look. So just needed to get some thoughts from others who are far more experienced than myself!
