I’m creating this topic on behalf of Paul Ducker (I hope he doesn’t mind), since I also hold interest in the reintroduction of the remote hosting pending feature.

Paul, Please open a new thread next time …

the sticking point in using it is that a number of the publications (as on your site for PublicPolicy.ie) are hosted elsewhere.

So you want publications hosted elsewhere to be listed, or not? If that’s a feature you want, it’s a feature that WP Publication Archive can support. The version coming out this month restores the remote hosting capabilities (which were disabled in openfile.php during the TimThumb remote code execution scare).

Open a new thread and link to it here so we can continue the conversation …

  • Thanks, Sebastian. Don’t mind at all. Glad that this is a topic that interests others.

Thanks also for Eric and David’s responses on the old thread. http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-wp-publication-archive-new-similar-plugin?replies=16#post-3504865

Yes. Am interested in the reintroduction of a feature within WP Publication Archive to list publications hosted elsewhere.

As context, I have recently taken on the management of a WordPress web site that is both a destination and launchpad for people with an interest in neighbourhood management (http://www.neighbourhoodmanagement.net). The site currently has a number of posts about useful publications, but they are not easy to find.

The facility offered by WP Publication Archive to include publications for download as well as signpost site users to publications hosted on other sites in a single list is very appealing, particularly if the list is searchable and/or can be grouped by category/tag/type.

Hope the above context is helpful. I sort of know what I want, but don’t have the skills to do it myself. Which is why I was so pleased to see David and Eric’s post.

This will definitely be enabled in the next version. It should be released before the end of Dec 2012.

This has been enabled as of version 2.5

    Thanks, Eric

    Looks really useful.

One thing I’d like to be able to do, but am not sure whether it is possible in this version (or likely to be added to future ones) is to be able to point to a web page on another site that includes a link for download. So, rather than either upload a file to my own site or link directly to the file for download on a third party site, to be able to include a link to a web page in my list of publications.

Am including this here as continuation of the above thread. Let me know if you’d prefer it to be submitted as a new feature request.

    Best wishes

I think this would work best as a new feature request at https://github.com/ericmann/WP-Publication-Archive/issues?direction=desc&sort=created&state=open.

That said … I’m not completely sure I see the need of this particular feature. The point of the plugin was to originally allow you to list privately hosted documents and files for download (i.e. things you upload to your own site). It’s been expanded to allow you to add 3rd-party hosted files as well that aren’t uploaded to your site.

What would be the point of including the bare link? If you put the URL of a 3rd-party hosted site in as a publication, when users hit http://yoursite.url/publication/title/wppa_download they’re still downloading it from the external site.

What would be the benefit be of exposing the 3rd party URL to the end user? Keep in mind, there are several outstanding requests to allow password protection on downloads – even 3rd party hosted ones – so exposing the unmasked URL would circumvent this kind of protection.
