Great to all who found the answer… me still looking πŸ™

I have done ALL , and i am now down to this situation:

did a LOCAL COMPLETE FRESH install,
so downloaded the latest version 3.4.2
    Created an EMPTY db,
    installed WP,
kept the default theme, no plugins,
opened the ‘new-post’ screen… and??? no VISUAL editor

So, a complete fresh install, and STILL nothing? pfff…

    i then started to downgrade,
    3.4.1 nothing
    3.3.1 nothing
    3.3.0 nothing
3.2.1 BINGO! “suddenly” the visual editor is back again. Happy, but actually not.

Upgrading again got 3.3.0 and again nothing…

So, now i am really in a weird situation. I need to start using the old version?

    What is the difference?

    Please advice.

And again, this is a clean install. no plugins installed, no themes etc…

  • Try going to your user profile.. and make sure the “disable visual editor” option is NOT checked.

What exactly is happening? Is the visual tab there, you just can’t click on it? If you type text in the editor box… is the text color white or black?

    What is the difference?

Anything other than the current version of WordPress should be considered insecure. First upgrade back to 3.4.2.

well, all i am doing is ‘testing’…

    Downgrading does ‘fix’ the problem.
So, this might tell us that the problem is caused by some difference in the WP files of the versions.

The whole investigation i started, since on three or four sites i suddenly noticed this “visual editor’ problem…

    Josh,
i tried that as well, but no luck here

    First upgrade back to 3.4.2.

Yep, first do as esmi explains above. This will ensure we are troubleshooting the correct (current) version.

Is there a javascript issue with your browser. Try using a different browser, or different computer, to access the content editor.

It’s not WP… I promise. If you are on a “bare-bones” install.. there is something else going on there.

    oke, found it…

i went into the code of file : class-wp-editor.php and did some research

it was idd local, my ‘user-agent’ was altered by a local virus-program on steriods.
    So it produced the user-agent:
    Mozilla/5.0 (000000000; 00000 000 00 0 000000) DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD DDDDDDD DDDD DDDDDD DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD DDDDDDDDDDDDD

And THIS user-agent does not set the ‘$wp_rich_edit’ set to ‘true’

So after modifying the local program (VirusBarrier X6) the useragent went back to ‘normal’ and the Visual Editor appeared again.

    Thanks your quick replies!!

    Sheesh…

What was the virus program, if you don’t mind me asking?
