    Hi,
I tried to create password protected directory using the Control Panel. But when directory is “ON” i.e. password protected link though wordpress doesn’t work – It says “not found”. When password disabled – all work ok (downloading pdf). I need that wordpress allows follow link to a protected file but with asking a pass login etc installed in CP. I mean that wordpress allow CP’s protected directory work.

P.S. Yes, I know that they are different systems and before I tried to protect a file by WordPress plugins like UAM etc. but smart people started to download the file directly bypassing the WordPress 🙂

    Any ideas?

  • You cannot password protect an entire WordPress install as you will be effectively blocking WordPress from itself. What is it that you are trying to protect?

I try to protect couple pdf files (sci research med docs) from unapproved downloading.
So I tried to create directory in the root or in wp-uploads but both are not work when they are protected “By CP”. I just thought that in root an additional folder can working “independently” and give a link in the wordpress to that folder.

An idea: May be I need to create a subdomain and create folder there?… Does wordpress will think that it is not in his/or her “area”?

Yes. I found for me simple solution.
I just created a subdomain then I created there a directory. I defended that directory by CP (password protected directory) and gave the link in wordpress. Voila.
