Gallery Without Descriptions

I am using a wordpress.com hosted blog and have created a gallery using the shortcode notation. In my image descriptions I usually have short broken up sentences just to describe the image to search engines not for the user to see. I would like for the gallery to only show the user the captions not the descriptions. Is this possible? Also what is the parameter for changing the gallery from a grid to tiled.
