A tricky (maybe impossible) plugin idea could be to generate the excerpt from guessed keywords (most frequent words, excepting a predefined list containing “the, of, it …)
Yes, Ozh, that would be quite tricky. I think i’d rather be patient, than do something overadventurous. LOL
In all versions of WP since 1.0 (I believe) if there is no excerpt one is faked from the first X words in the post. Is this what you were looking for?

has a “fakeit” argument that specifies whether an excerpt is made up or not if one doesn’t exist.
