I am running version 1.5.2 and someone was able to gain author status on my blog. Any ideas on how this could happen? Pardon if this is covered somewhere, but I can't find anything related.

you have been using a version of WordPress thats atleast one year old, and has any number of vulnerabilities, most of which have published eploits available in the wild for them.
In other words, if your site was compromised, or someone did something that they shouldnt have, you really have no further to look than at your own inattentiveness at keeping your site current.
