Just posting because I finally found it - hadn't seen Red Alt update their Role Manager pluging, but someone found a fix:

You can download his html, adjust via his diff file, or download the zip from me:

No gaurantees of course, but his fix absolutely worked on 3 of my sites.

Automatic sorting of roles by user level would be a nice thing, too. Any ideas of how to do that?

LostInNetwork, not sure how to do that or if any plugin out there has that feature. So far I've only seen Role Manager come anywhere near the ability for that functionality, but it doesn't sound like it can handle what you're after.
