• I subscribe to a few WP blogs and when I open an article to read it the text comes through without their theme. I’d like to do this on my blog but I can’t figure out who to disable my theme for RSS feeds. Can someone give me an assist on it?

I’m using the Tiga theme (with a few personalizations).

  • Your rss feed should never use your theme.

Got a link we could use to see this in action?

I’m using the Tiga theme and it doesn’t show up in my RSS feed. Maybe one of your “personalizations” is causing it to use the theme’s stylesheet.

RSS feeds are always plain text, no theme. So you’ll have to be more specific about your problem for us to understand it.

if it’s the site on your profile, it looks “normal” to me (and I do see Tiga on the main site)

The site is the one on my profile, http://www.ydwbog.com. The personalizations I made to the theme are actually just some color changes and the addition of a date block rather than the spelled out date. I just puled up an article in Thunderbird 2.0pre and I got the whole theme, not just the text. I know it’s not a Tbird issue because the feed for Aaron Brazell’s blog comes through as plain text.

    Your feed is here: http://www.ydwblog.com/?feed=rss2

And it’s fine. There’s no “theme” in it. It’s text, like any other RSS feed. Nothing strange about it at all.

What do you mean by “I got the whole theme, not just the text”? That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. can you be more specific, or post screenshots, or somehow explain just what you’re talking about?

When you click on one of the posts to read it, you get it with the full display, headers, sidebars and all. What I’m wanting to be able to do is let people see the posts i plain text. I’ll see about making some screenshots later this afternoon to show you what I’m thinking of.

You’re probably going to have to make some screenshots, because I don’t understand what you’re getting at here. A feedreader acts in whatever way it acts, but that’s independent from the content of the feed itself. A feed is plain text embedded in an XML document. Nothing else. It has no theming of any kind. If you’re seeing your webpage, then you’re seeing your actual webpage loaded from the web. Not from the feed.

Oh, and that link you gave above to “Aaron Brazell’s blog” has a weird feed that’s being routed through somewhere else. Feedburner or “b5media” or something. Not a normal feed by any means.

My feed runs through Feedburner (branded with b5media). HardinComp asked me the other day in an email and I failed to respond to him. Truth is, I’m not quite sure what he is referring to either. All I can think of is he saw the XSLT that is provided by Feedburner and assumed I had done some styling to it.

Also, Firefox 2 strips custom XSLT (i.e. Feedburner’s XSLT) so while some may see unstyled RSS, he may be seeing styled in Thunderbird (no experience, I use Mail.app for email).

I haven’t forgotten to make screenies, I’ve just been busy the last few days between trying to blog things, getting my online stores updated and just pain old household junk. I’ll try to get screenshots posted in a couple of days, although I may wait until my new servers goes online which could delay the posting to the end of next week.

i must agree with HardinComp. I use Thunderbird to show RSS feeds. And I do see the themes – rather did see the themes within Thunderbird. But now I cannot.

for example: I also subscribe to this feed http://www.n2growth.com/blog/wp-rss2.php

In thunderbird, the theme (including the side bar, header, etc) are displayed.

I used to be able to see the themes using thunderbird in my blog too – http://www.iqi-sm.com/blog/index.php/feed

    but now I cannot.

This is what I was talking about. for some strange reason, now thunderbird includes the wordpress in the feeds.

This feed was showing in plan text until this morning.

What Thunderbird displays is really up to Thunderbird. Judging from the screenshot, it looks like it’s loading the actual page from the website to display it. This may be because the feed doesn’t contain the full content in a content:encoded tag. You can change whether a wordpress feed does this or not by going to Options->Reading and setting it to Full Text or Summary.

But again, I don’t know if this will work. I don’t use Thunderbird.

Actually my blog is already set to Summary and I’m getting the full page (template and all). Latest check was with Thunderbird/2.0pre, build ID 2007030903.

Hardin: Yes, that was my point. Try setting it to full text, not summary. Full text will put the full text in your feed (inside the content:encoded) and then Thunderbird might not go and get your actual page from the website.

See, Thunderbird is currently not displaying your feed. It’s displaying the webpage. Bit of a difference there.
