uploading images

    when I attempt to upload an image, this is what I get:

    Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2012/11. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

    What am I doing wrong? Now, this is for my website which was created by my son, but it uses wordpress for my blog posts. Perhaps this is the problem?
