Advanced Database Interaction

I’ve looked through the codex and I can’t seem to find anything on this. I’m the author of Lowstream and I’ve begun to think the Lowstream would be better suited with it’s own table in the database. Does WordPress have any easy to use and already implemented methods of adding tables to the database and adding/removing data inside them, without creating a custom script separate from WordPress’ core functions?

If not, I’d be willing for someone who also willing, to sit down and teach me how to manually code database queries and such because I truly believe that this is the direction in which Lowstream needs to travel in order to grow further.
