    I think part of the problem could be I removed the “image link” box, so it no longer knows where the main image is…

    This should not be case. Have you made changes in widget code?

    Yes, exactly that is issue. Image link gives ability to add custom or external link for your image. Rather making it complex, i had added that option. Lemme know if you need my help with that.
