i’ll just add that every post has an image. It also seems like the images are all sitting in the media library. However, when I click on the image in the post and copy image location, it gives me a link back to my old wordpress.com site …

just to update –
i edited the urls for the images on the database, so now every image being pointed to is on my server. but still cant get the auto featured image …

Checks if you defined the post thumbnail, and if not it sets the thumbnail to the first uploaded image for that post.

The image for thumbnail/featured image must be attached to the post (this mean must be uploaded from edit post screen, and not in other post or from media library menu).
This is not a plugin limitation, but a limitation of WordPress core functions for featured image system.
Ok thanks, I can see now that all my images became unattached during the server move – I can see that in my old wordpress.com media library that they are all attached to posts, and in the new one they are not (even though they are all in the right places in the posts).
now i am working through reattaching the main image to the right post individually so your plugin works … dont suppose you know an easy way to do this with 300 posts?

When importing content you have the option to check a checkbox for just for that, maybe you should try to reimport the content.
do you mean the “download attachments” checkbox? i checked that … anyway, i am about half way now so if i re-import i worry i might lose all the attach’s i’ve done so far, so I think i’ll just crack on.
