• I am new to WordPress, so please bear with me. I have downloaded several themes that do not contain templates. Where should I acquire templates, and how should I tie them into the theme? Thanks in advance.

  • What do you mean, they don’t contain templates? They don’t have the .php files? Or they don’t have the stylesheet?

First of all, you should only be downloading the themes listed here:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Get_New_Themes

Here are the instructions on how to add them:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Using_Themes

First of all, you should only be downloading the themes listed here:

    What’s this all about then?

“First of all, you should only be downloading the themes listed here:

I wouldnt say that… there are lots of various sites with themes for WP that are not listed at the link you provided 😉

Anyway, what themes have you downloaded that didnt include templates? Are there no php files and just a css file?

There are templates for WP v1.2.x and themes for WP v1.5. Templates for Wp v1.2.x do not work in WP v1.5. I spend my free time every day hunting for theme announcements and adding themes to that list. As far as I am concerned, http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Get_New_Themes is the only complete list of WP v1.5 themes. If you know of any WP v1.5 themes (NOT WP v1.2.x templates) which are not on the list, please add them.

For anyone who may be interested, there is also the unofficial list at
    http://shadows.os42.com/2005/02/19/wp-themes-list-for-15/
    and
    http://te.os42.com/?p=127

They are unofficial of course, but if you are really lucky they will work just the same 🙂

Shadow’s list contains several themes that for whatever reason have been left off Macmanx’s Official Codex List. I imagine the designers would be pretty p***ed off by any suggestion that they should not be downloaded by anyone, just because the developers happen not to approve of them.

Thank you for you contributions, Shadow. The list is now complete. http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#A_List_of_Downloadable_Themes

As for the comment on your site about “the pettiness of many of the people involved in WP.”
All I did was use a little bit of italics in hope that the theme developers would also submit their themes to the official list, because the official list (being part of the documentation) will more than likely be the destination of most users looking for new themes. “Petty”? I call your unwillingness to contribute to the existing documentation “petty”.

“for whatever reason have been left off Macmanx’s Official Codex List.”

This is not my list, this is the communities list. Anyone can add to it. If for some reason I missed a theme, then it would be up to the theme developer to submit it him/herself, which he/she should be doing in the first place. Also, you need to realize that we are all volunteer, IOW we don’t get paid. So, you can contribute, or take your little attitude somewhere else.

Hmm there’s this silly little fight going on between the offical and unofficial theming nonense – I’ve seen it in several threads, perhaps you guys should sit round a table and talk it through, since every other theme that is released has…”Added to the official list” and then “added to the unofficial list”. It’s a bit tedious. Come on, where’s the community in that?

Agreed. We have this ridiculous situation where rather than just announcing their themes on their own site and the forum, developers are now supposed to submit them directly to Macmanx, and Shadow, and Rust Indy. Oh, and they should sign up for Codex and add it there too, just in case Macmanx misses it. Seriously, who’s going to bother doing all that?

…should sign up for Codex and add it there too, just in case Macmanx misses it…

I guess you are the one who misses something here. I mean anybody, and I really mean anybody can add themes or whatever they wish to the Codex. So, instead of writing here non-sense posts we (including myself:) could add links and other useful stuff to the Codex.

Moshu, thank you for adding some much-needed clarity to this topic. Must be your excellent command of “Cross-Cultural Communication skills”. ^_-

What’s wrong with going to “Templates and Design” and announcing your themes/templates there? It’s part of WordPress. If it’s not on the official sanctioned site, it’s still here on the WP site where it can be found.

And for heaven’s sake, there’s always Google. I don’t think there should be so much backbiting going on about someone’s themes/templates being or not being on anyone’s list. If the designer wants to take the time to hunt down all the WP theme “sites” and add his or her name to the ring, fine. But as long as they can all be easily found, as long as they are on one or the other list, I don’t see what the problem is. But maybe that’s because I personally haven’t had a chance to upgrade any of my Alpha themes yet. When I do, I imagine I’ll just post announcements in the “Templates and Design” section as I’ve always done in the past.

Announcing in Templates and Design is great, and some do it, but it doesn’t provide a self-contained list. Most announcements are burried in under a week.

Hope you don’t mind the cross-posting, but I feel obligated to resolve this.

I’m sorry that it’s all going this way, Shadow. I had not intentions of causing any bickering or power plays. This all began when I italicized the word “official”. If I had know that it was in bad taste, I wouldn’t have done it, and I am sorry. Again, I only used the italics in hope that the theme developers would also submit their themes to the official list, because the official list (being part of the documentation) will more than likely be the destination of most users looking for new themes. Shadow, I think you and I can both agree that we’ve gone too far with this simple issue and all we really can do is take it further or forgive each other. I admit that I’m a hot-head sometimes, and I’ve had enough family deaths this month to justify that right now, but now we’re just turning this issue into a personal war which was the furthest thought from my mind when I used the italics. Shadow, your list is great and we all appreciate the effort and hope that you will keep it up. I can’t go back and edit/delete my forum entries, but I hope you can accept this as some form of apology.

(Update: He has accepted the apology. Thanks, Shadow!)
