if wordpress is not in root, you still need one in root but also one in wordpress root.

Hi, I called bluehost and they guided me to create one in the root rather than in the wordpress root. I just created another one in the wordpress root. Will it be a problem to have the other one, a level above wordpress? Shall I delete it or leave it?

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly.

Is there a search feature on the support forum?

in file manager it would be 1st file listed in wordpress root.
to do it automatically, you would chmod .htaccess to 666 - save permalinks and chmod back to 644 for security

if you don't have an .htaccess file yet

To set the settings for permalink, directions say:

If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.

I can't find the .htaccess files to figure out how to do the above. Can someone please lead me step by step?

Thank you.
