SOLVED FOR ME!

I had problems too and couldn't figure out at all. I have two blogs running on the same server and one worked and the other didn't. I looked at all the stuff here, I deleted plugins, tables, images, etc.

For whatever reason I decided to try editing my galleries in IE and low and behold the thumbnails work again.

I'm sure it has something to do with the junk I have running on Firefox but Chrome didn't work. I'm not running the latest IE either it's IE6.

Hope this helps someone.

Nope, same error message. I think 1and1 is just too backwards to have a web site using Nextgen on.

I am on 1&1 too. What a load of crap. They suggest changing the PHP version to ver 5 and this is supposed to do it.

From an email from 1&1 support:

This is connection with your call earlier.

Create a new .htaccess file or edit an existing one.

Create a ".htaccess" file containing the following line:
AddType x-mapp-php4 .html .htm

Upload this file into into the root of your domain. The changes take
effect immediately. This will effect the directory the .htaccess is
placed in and all the sub-directories underneath it.

How to parse PHP within HTML files
http://faq.1and1.com/scripting_languages_supported/php/7.html

Due to resource limits on our Shared Hosting machines, it is not
possible to allocate more than 20M of memory to PHP, although phpinfo()
may report a higher number. You will be unable to increase the memory
usage limit with a php.ini file.

Hope this information helps.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

I was able to fix this problem simply by resizing the dimensions of the files, thanks to @jwcalla's suggestion. Most of my uploads were generating thumbnails just fine, but for two files I got the [object XMLHttpRequest] error and no thumbnail was generated.

They weren't the largest I'd tried to upload as far as memory, but they were each about 3000px in their largest dimension. I downsized them to 1000px in their largest dimension and they uploaded and generated thumbnails just fine!

Hope this is helpful to someone.

First of, thanks Alex for making this great plugin.

I'm having the same issue with NextGen gallery: it won't generate thumbnails. When I upload images, few 4-5 thumb created others reports the following error:

ID 5017: A failure occurred
[more]
[object XMLHttpRequest]

I hit this same problem after maybe couple of updates of WP and NextGen-gallery plugin. I started to look this more closely since everthing I did for the php config or WP did not seem to work. Fortunately I have own virtual server and I'm able to look what happens.

The plugin seems to do this in some certain circumstances I don't know:
1. when uploading images it makes thumbnails on the fly which seems to eat up lot of resources. It makes some thumbnails but when memory fulls it skips the rest.
2. when trying to make thumbnails in Manage Gallery section it totally eats up apaches resources and some cases even gets the server on the knees.

I have 256+256 memory and ordinarily used memory is about 50-60Mb but when I try to make just one thumbnail it eats up hole memory and even the swap file too and server some time crashes and I have to restart it again.

Could there be a bug in that gd.thumbnail.inc.php-file? Something which could get the script looping and thus eating all the memory?

I have LAMP with ubuntu jaunty and latest updates.

If I can be for any help, please let me know.

I have exactly the same problems:
images of no greater than 40 kB and no thumbnails!!

But then I went to my host and turned off the 'Safe Mode' in my profile.
I also changed the permission settings of my gallery map on the server to 777.

I really have little idea of what this all means, but hell, it works!

Good luck to all

I'm having the same issue with NextGen gallery: it won't generate thumbnails. When I upload images, it reports the following error:

You do not have the GD Library installed. This class requires the GD library to function properly. visit http://us2.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php for more information

I installed both Wordpress and NextGen gallery (version 1.3.5) for the first time today - I have never used any of it before.

Besides NextGen, I have only the two default plugins installed (Hello Dolly and Akismet) and both are deactivated. So the problem does not appear to be a conflict with another plugin.

My server details are as follows:

    * Operating System : Linux
* Server : Apache/2.2.11 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.6-3ubuntu4.1 with Suhosin-Patch
* Memory usage : 12.95 MByte
* MYSQL Version : 5.0.75-0ubuntu10.2
* SQL Mode : Not set
* PHP Version : 5.2.6-3ubuntu4.1
* PHP Safe Mode : Off
* PHP Allow URL fopen : On
* PHP Memory Limit : 32M
* PHP Max Upload Size : 2M
* PHP Max Post Size : 8M
* PHP Max Script Execute Time : 30s
* PHP Exif support : Yes ( V1.4 )
* PHP IPTC support : Yes
* PHP XML support : Yes

The images I am trying to upload with NextGen are all small and optimized for the web - they vary in size between 50kB and 120kB. So I doubt whether memory would be an issue.

You can view one of the images here: http://www.martinalees.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/rosa-slade565.jpg
I am unsure whether there could be a problem with the metadata on the images.

Please advise. (And please bear in mind that I am a rookie at this, so would really appreciate simple explanations :-) )

Thanks a lot!

Near as I can figure my thumbnail problem is being cased by incorrect permissions being set on my files. So the images upload fine and then are unable to create thumbnails because they cannot be read. In order to create the thumbnails I have to change all of the permissions on the files for the CREATOR OWNER to full control.

I'm running on IIS with Windows 7 x64 RC, not that that is a big reason for it. It just looks like that whoever is creating the images is also setting the permissions strangely... perhaps not even with proper read permissions.

Similar issue using WP 2.8 and NextGen

Using my custom theme, I get the following error message when uploading images:

ID 1: A failure occurred
[more]
1

The images are uploaded but the "Edit thumb" link does not display the image and does not work. Occasionally, the image is uploaded to the "gallery" dir but the thumb is not created and the image is not listed in the gallery.

If I switch to the default theme, everything works perfectly.

I have tried uninstall/reinstall, increasing PHP memory limit, deleting all plugins, etc. and the above two situations stay the same.

Does anyone know why the theme would affect the uploading process and thumbnail editing?

Alright for kicks I decided to create an 800x600 jpg image, all black. The file size was 3,179 bytes. Tried to import it in NGG and got the same error when creating the thumbnail (A failure occurred [object XMLHttpRequest]).

So if it's a memory issue I suppose it's related to the image dimension rather than file size... well... in my case anyway.

I suppose all image manipulation should be done offline anyway and then uploaded to the server.

hey im having a issue with thumbnails as well. Its a little different, I dont have any probs making them and all that, but when i go 2 display them on my gallery page the gallery thumbnail doesn't show, but you can still click on it and opens up the full gallery and then i only have the first 7 pics come up with thumbnails. Have a look at my page and see what I mean. I've tried heaps and heaps of things and am still stuck. It did use to work, but cant remember if it was with an older ver of nextgen or wp 2.7.

Hi,
i was having the same problems and found the solution after reading kobera's post. i disabled other plugins and tried again and "cforms" was causing a conflict with ngg. now everything's working properly. what i suggest is to upload all photos and later activate your plugins. i know this is not the way it's supposed to be but this is the only solution.

I had the same problem. I wasn't able to create thumbnails at all. No response and no thumbnails.
Now everything works!!! :)
Thanks for this plugin.

I actually used it perfectly for a while. Thumbnails worked perfectly and what not. But suddenly they just stopped appearing. When I click on "Edit thumbnail" an error comes out:

I just installed Nextgen to an upgraded WP 2.8 for the first time and was having this problem. One or two thumbnails in each and every gallery was broken.

This is how i fixed the problem. Go to the broken thumbnail and click "Edit Thumbnail", then crop it and save it and the thumbnail will then appear.

Hope it helps.

My problem is a little different, but related. Nextgen uploads images and creates thumbnails just fine, but I can only see the thumbnails in the manage gallery tab under sort gallery. I can sort the order at will, but that is the only place the thumbnails ever show up. The sorting works and the changes appear on my pages, but I can only see the thumbnails by sorting them. Problem if i want to add tags, move, delete, etc. Any help?

I also ran into the problem when I was forced to update WP a week ago.
It is definitely a memory problem. Period. With the standard 40MByte php Memory Space and about 13 MByte Space being used by WP itself (no widgets and plugins active/installed at all) you are not able to upload a picture which increases above 640x480.
That makes nextgen definitely unuseable for all those WP users who have an account by the average hosting provider such as 1und1 and subsidiaries, which don't increase the space unless you pay them $$.
Sad, because 640x480 is no longer state of the art in the photo and picture world. Sad because nextgens capabilities to integrate as widgets in the sidebar so easily is really an advantage compared to other gallery solutions. Specially for those who have really little time to concentrate on beautifying their WP.
In other words, I gave up (yes, even 1.30b1 did not solve the problem)

I was struggling with the same problem for a bit but when I de-activated the "Yet Another Related Posts Plugin" (YARPP 3.0.4) I was able to get back to creating thumbnails. Not sure what the conflict is there.

Also, I've watched 'top' on my server while running the php script to create the thumbnails and the max memory used was 24M. My php memory limit is set to 40M.

Experiencing the same strange issues - 1&1 Hosting, WP 2.7.1, current ngg. Same config as the guys above.

Is it possible that this issue somehow correlates to the "HTTP Error" of the common WP (Flash) Uploader (e.g. discussed here http://www.chewie.co.uk/general/wordpress-image-upload-http-error/)?! Does ngg hook on the WP-integrated routines to rework media-files?

Regarding the WP http error: none of the fixes workes for me.

Other question: Are you guys all using Macs?! Or does it occur on Windows too?

I'd loooove to have those thumbnails working...

I had the same problem with the thumbnails, but it went away after upping my memory limit to 70Mb in my php.ini file.
It did work great in my developer server (xampp), and in the real server (I asked my hosting to up my memory limit for me).

But I still get:

ID 1: A failure occurred
[more]
[object XMLHttpRequest]

This happens when trying to resize images. (bulk option, even if just choosing 1 photo).
Also the "Edit Thumb"/"Customize Thumbnail" option doesn't work, when selecting a new area and clicking Update it says in red "Error updating thumbnail".

I hope that somebody can find a solution or at least an explanation for the XMLHttpRequest error. I'm sure it has something to do with the GD Library.

Thanks for this great plugin.

This is possible, but a lot of hoster didn't allow to set the php.ini via a script.
