I have been using 2.7 for awhile and had no problems with image uploads until today (Nov 8, 2009) After all the great suggestions provide here the only thing that worked was disabling my S3 plugin. Never used it anyway.

Keep up the great work. I am avoiding 2.8 even though it is supposed to be bullet proof. Yeah, sure. And I am a internet millionaire.

Hey eibhlin,

Thank you for solving my problem with the image issue. I read your instructions and that helped me! Http://www.flipstips.com

First, I had to fix the problems created by rolling back to 2.6.5.

2.6.5 files had changed the database Uploads path to the full path (myusername/root/domainname.com/wp-content/uploads/...) so I had to go into pHpMyAdmin and change it back to /wp-content/uploads in the Options section.

My existing images reappeared on my website. Whew!

But, retrying 2.7, I was still reaching the error message when I tried to upload new images through WordPress.

An overnight conversation with tech support ensued, and they found the problem.

In my case, the new (2.7) wp-content/uploads folder had automatically uploaded with CHMOD 777. Apparently, my hosting service (Hostgator) won't allow 777, only 755.

So, switching all folders back to CHMOD 755 solved the problem.

Wat I did was changing the attributes of de wp-content folder tot 777 and I noticed that the 'uploads' folder was missing, strangely enough. So I created one and it works now.

Hi,
I found the solution to this problem after very long (very very) time.
It's so simple, I'm shame to explain:
You have to check if the URL for the installation do not have any
CAPITAL letters.
* You can change this URL at the settings panel

I had! When i change it to be without any CAPITALS it works

Whoopee
Hope this is also your bug

I installed Wordpress a few days ago, and was running into the dead image (red X's) problem that others seem to be sharing. I tried the suggestion about, and that didn't work for, still saying "Cannot move file to .../wp-content/uploads". However if you:

1. Using an FTP client, or browsing your site through a web-based control panel, create a folder in the root directory for your uploads. Mine is
images
. Make sure the permissions are set to 777 (I haven't tested with any other, because I'm too tired to right now).

2. Go to Settings/Misc, and change the the "Store uploads in this folder" from
wp-content/uploads
to that folder. All you have to do is type in the name of the folder. So my entry looks like
images
.

Test it out and see if it works. This worked for me and seems like a straight-forward, simple solution.

For people who didnt find a solution yet u can try this.

1. Upload a picture in ie7 (If you can afcourse ;-))
2. U see a small box with a cross, right click on it and check out the location (This is probably wrong)
3. Change under Settings/Miscellaneous the path u see in step 2.

Example:
Image location url: http://www.yourWEB.nl/wp-content/uploads/yourimage.jpg
So path to store images must be wp-content/uploads

This and PHP Safe Mode off did the trick for me.

When I click any of the icons in the Add New Post panel, nothing happens. No pop up, no upload interface, nothing. Browser just kinda displays the timer for a second then and does nothing. How do I fix this? I don't understand how this happened.

When in the Media upload tab, only Browser Upload works. But its such a hassle to upload via that tab then copy paste links to your post.

I had similar problems as you all, but the chmod-ing and path were the first things I checked and still didn't help. I would get a HTTP Error and unable to upload, try again later error whenever I would upload images (it'd get to the crunching then puke on me)

I found that if I upload smaller images ( < 200k) it worked fine, so I have images now, but can anyone help with what I would need to change to get larger images uploaded (is it a buffer or something like that?)

(WP 2.7)

I'm going mad. I set dozens of folders to all from 000 to 999, I renamed uploads, downloads, upload, uploat folders, not to speak of contents, condensed, comments, comementomori and morituri_te_salutant ones. I checked that safe_mode is set to OFF and ON and UP and DOWN. I disabled the one plugIn I dared to install, I went back to the basic WP theme instead of the one I needed. I set WP up again and trying with the hello world post alone: All in vain.

What started with a plain "Unable to create directory ..." sometimes displayed a blank screen, using both the Flash and the Browser uploader. Strange enough sometimes the files were uploaded indeed, even if the uploader seemed to have gone stuck.

What can I do? My general approach is to leave things like these alone for a day or so. But this is going on for 2 weeks now. Any idea? Any real answer on WHY this is happening?

All help appreciated very much!

I've managed to correct the blank screen problem. For me, it was a template issue which I've fixed. Image upload is now working for me. However, it often fails. It crunches and looks like it's working, but then no thumbnail is created. Not sure what the problem is at this point.

My path is already set to wp-content/uploads, but I'm still getting the white screen when I upload photos. This only happens in Firefox, I've been using IE to write my posts. Which isn't great, IE has its own glitches with WordPress that I don't like. But when I try to upload in Firefox it takes me to a completely different screen instead of just the old pop-up, and it goes through the steps of uploading but right before it should show me the screen with the photos in my gallery, the page goes blank. And nothing appears in the original post, it takes me away from the post altogether and I can't get back. I tried opening the photo upload screen in a new tab, but they seem to be completely disconnected.

I had a similar problem with the last version, but not this bad. I had to upload my photos in IE, but once they were uploaded I could access them from the post's gallery or the Media Library in Firefox and insert them into my post. It's been ages since I've been able to just use Firefox to write my posts and upload my photos. I haven't seen any Moderator replies to this yet, so I'm hoping the problem gets fixed soon!

Your suggestion worked for me. The path was wp-content and I updated it to wp-content/uploads (although it says on the side that default is wp-content/uploads - I guess a mistake in 2.7) and it works when I use the browser uploader.

Solution for the error

Step 1: Log into your admin panel

Step 2: Go to Settings>>Miscellaneous

You will see two options,

Store uploads in this folder
Full URL path to files
Most probably you will see

/home/.boogee/XXXXX/XXXXXXX/wp-content/uploads

in the first field.

Step 3: Edit that to just

wp-contents/uploads

PS: Please take a backup of what you are editing, incase this trick didnt work, you can restore the old URL.

This should do the trick.

It worked for me, I manually mad a new folder called "uploads" and then changed the permissions higher and higher until it worked. It may have been 777 in the end...

Then I tried uploading again and presto! Perhaps those who are changing permissions and not getting results on 2.7 are not manually creating the uploads folder to start with?

Thanks folks! You gave me the idea to do the same. I disabled all my active plugins and started to reactivate them one-by-one!

CommentLv is another plugin that stops the image uploader from working also!

Thank you so much! Next time, I'll try disabling the plugins like that again! Lesson learned.

Thanks for the help on this one! It was driving me crazy.

I deactivated the Amazon plugin and everything with my images returned to normal!

If only I could get my tags to start working again...

I don't know if this is truly related or not, but I was having the same problem. I wasn't using the WP Amazon plugin, but I did still have the Automatic Upgrade plugin activated, which might have been a conflict with WP's new automatic upgrade feature. I disabled the plugin and it seems to be working fairly well.

I had the same problem with permissions on uploads after upgrading from 2.7 beta to 2.7. I got an error message telling that it couldn't upload to /wp-content/uploads/2008/12/ because permission was denied. All folders was there, the folders "2008" and "12" was created by WP and given permission 777. However, I did not have permission to change the permission on these folders myself. I then delete those two and created them again with permission 777 and everything worked.
I hope this gets solved however, since I don't want to do this manually for every month of the year.
