The sorting itself is pretty much identical, but my plugin provides a widget that is much more configurable than the built in category widget.

Built in widget:
-title
-show as dropdown
-show post counts
-show hierarchy

My Category Order widget, all the above plus:
-show update date
-show empty
-feed text
-feed image url
-exclude categories
-include categories

And I provide quick and personal support to anybody who asks for help, even if the problem is unrelated to my plugins. I've exchanged thousands of emails over the past three years and I think people value that more than one person's suggestion on a random thread.

Give it another try, the zip file is downloading for me and I just deleted/added it through my WP 2.7 install.

Seems this is a problem with plugins at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins and it sounds like there's a problem with themes as well. Hopefully will be fixed soon.

Yes, there seems to be a problem with that plugin because you can't even download the zip file at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/my-category-order/

Hopefully the author will fix that. I've tagged this thread and move the thread into the Plugins and Hacks forum and changed the topic to reflect the problem.

I am having an issue with module automatic upgrades, and it's all of them, not just one. This is what I get:

Upgrade Plugin

Downloading update from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/my-category-order.2.7.zip

Download failed.: HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found

Installation Failed

I had a hard time running the Wordpress automatic upgrade module, it asked for my FTP credentials, so I'm thinking it's a permissions issue. It's a godaddy hosted blog - I used the automatic installation tool in Godaddy and then added my mods.
