Sorry for your problems with Zemanta. In last few months we've greatly increased the reliability of our code and how we work within blogs.

Do you still see the problems? Please contact me - jure@zemanta.com with the issues you're having and I'll make sure that we fix them ASAP. We do not take breaking blogs lighltly.

earthlydream,

Yes, Zemanta does some strange things. It is a great concept, but the Zemanta plugin seems to be very unstable. I use it on a few different blogs and continually have to fight with it. At first, I thought maybe there was just a "learning curve" involved. But, it is just the plugin causing problems.

As for your column problems, have you tried de-activating or un-installing the Zemanta plugin to see if that solves the problem. If that doesn't do the trick, then look closely at the code around where you had placed the pic you described. It only takes one small character out of place to break a wordpress blog. WP is about as forgiving as Internet Explorer.

Don't mean to sound negative; WP is still a great platform. I would hate to have to go back to building static HTML sites.

Duddha - thanks for the good comments. I plan to put a blogroll of some kind on that "empty" right sidebar.

I will also start moving away from images that are linked from other sites. I did that for today's post - copied the Wikipedia image to my own site and hosting it there.

Do you have any recommendations for how to make a favicon - some site where I can get that? Or instructions for how to use one with WordPress?

Thanks again!

The right sidebar is kinda empty might fill it up with bigger Google skyscraper ads or widgets or something. Could get a plugin for rotating html pop in a text widget to rotate tips on doin stuff greener.

The add to any plugin looks pretty sweet.

Check into favicons, the little picture by the address to your site.

Check out Court's Internet Marketing Blog good info there.

The images I saw on the front page seem to all be hot linked from other sites like Wikipedia. While the images may be in the public domain, it is still considered stealing bandwidth. I recommend downloading them, and if necessary resizing them i.e. Energy Plus building image that breaks into the sidebar. At the very least you should want to control the images on your site, Wikipedia prolly wont change your images to anything nasty.

Realized I didn't mention two things:

1. I'm using a theme recommended by Blogsessive in this post, called Neoclassical. I'll be replacing the default images (that say "Neoclassical Theme for Wordpress" with some of my own as soon as I can.

2. I'm using a plug in called "Add to Any" to support Digg'ing, Reddit'ing, etc.

Comments on those plugins would be interesting as well.

My blog is http://barrier-busting.com.

I'm using WP 2.6, hosting it myself on GoDaddy, and have installed a couple of nifty plugins so far:

Zemanta, which I like a lot (although I'd love to hear others' feedback on both the plugin itself, as well as my usage of it.

Simple Tags - I'm starting to feel like the tags I've been using so far are not quite the right set. Suggestions welcome - or let me know if you think they're OK.

I also have All-In-One SEO Pack installed, which I'm hoping is doing good magic for me, although honestly I don't quite understand it.

I started the blog about three weeks ago, and so far have pretty low amounts of traffic. Now that I've managed to post every day for three weeks, I really need to start pushing the marketing side. Not so much because I want to make money (although that would be nice) but I'd definitely like to start up a conversation about green energy and how it can be profitably applied and save the world from catastrophic climate change at the same time.

My belief is that:

We can make the transition to clean energy with existing technologies and upcoming innovations

It will be profitable to do so, rather than costly (if we do it right)

The only way to accomplish this is via "integrative design" - wringing every efficiency and benefit possible out of everything we do, whether building new homes and office buildings, or reforming the transportation system,

The world we live in will look far different in 15-20 years in terms of how we use energy, but we'll all continue to have excellent lifestyles - we'll still be driving, flying, and taking hot showers.

I started this blog three weeks ago, after having an epiphany that I just wasn't seeing this type of integrative thinking in the public square, even on sites like Treehugger and other green sites (which I'm a big support of, of course) I'm inspired particularly be Amory Lovins (of the Rocky Mountain Institute and "negawatts" fame) and the futurist and inventor Ray Kurzweil (best known for the Law of Accelerating Returns and "the singularity").

Nils Davis
nils@barrier-busting.com
nilsdavis@yahoo.com
http://barrier-busting.com

McDragon on "Blogger import discrepancy (bug) regarding tags, categories and labels"

Hi

I posted this on the Zemanta support site:
http://tinyurl.com/5p2hbm

There is definately a problem with the import of blog from Google's Blogger (Blogspot) to Wordpress.org.

Problem:
- Google -> labels
- Wordpress -> categories, tags

The import puts labels into categories and I am sure this is wrong, especially after reading what tags v. categories really is. Labels are really tags and not categories and this is where the Zemanta addon shows the discrepancy. In Blogger it will help you add labels and in Wordpress it will, in my opinion correctly, help you add tags.
Then you suddenly see there is a problem, your old imported posts have lots of categories, while your new ones have tags.

The added problem was that I could not uncategorise in my post edit but had to remove all categories through the Manage - Categories menu.
I was about to report this as a bug but wanted to put it to the Forum.

What do you guys think?
