Well it seems that the latest wordpress update has fixed my xml error. this is actually starting to worry me though, as Wordpress used to be solid right out of the box, and with the newest updates, additions etc, it seems that more issues are coming up making my confidence in this blogging platform fall.

I hope these issue fade away into the archives along with the older versions!

hello:

I am having issues with editing my blog with a 3rd party editor,
i can post new articles, but when i try to refresh the articles to see "the newest ones" i get this error:
"error decoding XML-RPC response the mark up in the document following the root must be well formed"
I use Qumana and i have no problem with any of my other wordpress blogs, only this one www.rlfleming.com
it seems that the last post i can see in the editor is from 8/2/09
I am lost as to what is causing this issue.

Thank you in advance

I just finished installing WP this evening on a site, and I'm having a problem with the admin screen. In IE, I can't even get to the admin because I get this error:

XML document must have a top level element. Error processing resource 'http://www.[snip].com/wp-admin/'.

However, in Firefox, I get a momentary message at the login screen, and then I'll get the login. Once I'm logged in, I get the same error when editing a page. The message flashes to the screen, then goes back to the dashboard. This is the error:

XML Parsing Error: no element found.
Location: http//www.[snip].com/wp-admin/page.php
Line Number 1, Column 1:

^

VERY weird. It's a vanilla install of WP at this point, and I just installed the exact same files on a different domain yesterday (same host). Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

Thanks so much everyone! I went through all the core files that had to do with feeds and think it might have been that one of them had uploaded improperly, because though I didn't find any blank lines, once everything was uploaded again, it did seem to start working. So, for future people who run into this problem, that might fix things for you, too :-).

For me, I was seeing the error both when I clicked the RSS button in Firefox and also when I tried burning the feed in my FeedBurner account.

I'm glad you got yours fixed, too, matrixagent!

Again, thank you so much everyone--I really appreciate the help!

It appears that the rendered RSS feed, when you view source in firefox, has an empty first line. the <?xml ...> stuff starts on line 2. If you save the file, remove the empty line, and re-load in firefox, it works fine... However, I can't figure out where in the wordpress code this empty line is coming from.

I've got the same problem and couldn't find a solution yet.

MarkRH: The problem is that some feed readers just quit instantly when this error comes up. In Firefox for example I only get an error page when loading my feed, while in FeedDemon, my feed reader, there a still new entries coming up.

Edit: I got it - my theme's functions.php had four blank lines between some ?> and <? tags.

Just to give things a "bump" here is a precise example of that's happening:

In my code view, a link looks like this:

<a title="Website design by LaGreca Arts" href="http://www.lagrecaarts.com/technology-services/services/web-design">Web Design</a>

Looks good, right? Well, when I use a code view from Safari or in the W3C output view, the link looks like this:

<a href="http://www.lagrecaarts.com/technology-services/services/web-design"title="Website design by LaGreca Arts" >Web Design</a>

Now that's not right. Why/where is Wordpress doing this?

Hi folks!
Here's a problem that I've been fighting a loosing battle with: Proper validation with W3C.

I think the problem lies with Wordpress removing spaces in the attributes within tags. Here's the page in question: http://www.lagrecaarts.com/shop. When looking at the page in code view, everything looks good. But the code output view in the W3.org page clearly shows the spacing missing between the href and title attributes.

I've switched themes to test, no change.
I've turned off the "correct invalid nested XHTML.." option, no change.

And funny, but there doesn't seem to be a problem with my homepage, which also has hyperlinks.

Any ideas, other than "disable the visual editor"?
:-)

Thanks,
