I upgraded my WordPress to version 2.8.6 but in the process, all my published pages disappeared.

I ran the WordPress Database Backup plugin (before upgrading) which left me with a SQL file. Does anyone know how to convert an SQL to a WXR file? I'm going to try importing the missing pages.

Thanks,

Howdy.

I exported my blog from the export dialogue, moved a bunch of stuff around, wiped the database, and then tried to import the WRX file that was created in the export, but it keeps giving me the following error ...

"Please upload a valid WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) export file."

Here's the WXR XML file ... can anyone help? What's going wrong here?

Disclaimer: Not a dev nor guru here, but from experience :-)
WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) import involves getting following basic information below. You can download a sample XML file for importing to WP at http://wpcandy.com/articles/easier-theme-development-with-the-sample-post-collection.html and open it up.

At the beginning of e.g. expressionengine.xml file for import to WP install

<rss version="2.0"
	xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"

up to just before the first
tag

I tried doing a couple of searches of the forum and didn't find an answer to this so I thought I'd ask.

I'm in the process of attempting to migrate off the ExpressionEngine platform to individual WP installs for the various blogs I either host or run myself. The suggested method of doing this is to use the MT Import format to make the transition, but there are two problems with that approach: 1) I lose all my tags (I'm using a tag module) and my category hierarchy is lost and 2) there's no way to specify an email for the author of entries so when WP makes the users for the entries not authored by myself those users have no way of getting their passwords reset for their accounts.

I thought I'd just make a template for EE that would output all the data needed for a WXR file, but I can't seem to locate any info on what that file should consist of. So I set up a test WP install and exported a sample file. I now have an EE export template that is about 85% functional which is far from perfect. Of the 10 entries I export from EE with it WP imported 6 and screwed up their order and didn't like the dates on some of them.

So what I'm looking for is a detailed notation of what constitutes a WXR file. What lines are mandatory and what lines will WP fill in automatically if they're not provided in the file. I think I can make an EE template that would work 100% if I had that info. Can anyone point me to where I might find some documentation on WXR?

Thanks ahead of time.

I have the same problem with the latest 2.8.4 version of WordPress. I hope the wordpress developers will find a solution for that ! It is so hard to export / import / translate all post, link, pics, videos etc. from one blog to another when you change provider for example ! Simple database backup is not enough at all !!!

Here's what I did to get tags working properly:
Use the following for the tags (one tag per line):

<wp:tag><wp:tag_slug>iPhone</wp:tag_slug><wp:tag_name>iPhone</wp:tag_name></wp:tag>

instead of (one tag on multiple lines):

<wp:tag>
<wp:tag_slug>tag1</wp:tag_slug>
<wp:tag_name>
tag1
</wp:tag_name>
</wp:tag>

The thing to remember is that they are just doing simple line oriented (and dumb regex) parsing of the XML and not true serialization (unfortunately.)

The same is true for categories.

Process_tags function can't handle Wordpress' own tag format. This is with version 2.8.4, so I can't speak to older versions. I think. Still testing

I'm sure this is no help at all after all this time, but I think the XML line you're missing in the import is

<wp:status>publish</wp:status>

Without it, your entries will stay in draft mode until you change them by hand or rerun the import with that line in each item.

This is still broken in WP 2.7.1, both for categories and for tags. The fix above works for categories, but tags has no checkboxes to toggle...

You can't import from an older version to a newer one because there are differences in the databases. The two WordPress versions need to match.

Thanks very much for your answer. I actually don´t want to upgrade my version of WP as I had installed the new version on a new domain, I just want to expoert the content from the old installation and import it on the new installation. It is not problem to import the content on the new installation, I just can´t find the way to export the content from the old 1.5 wp version.

thanks

Hi

I have a blog that was created with WP 1.52, now I have another domain on which I had installed WP v2.8, I want to export the content from my old blog into my new one.
I had seen some topics regarding problems with the WXR file but I cannot find the way of doing this export on WP version 1.5.2. I am using the following theme: WordPress Default 1.5 by Michael Heilemann. I basically cannot find the option to export on v.1.5

any help will be appreciated.

I had the same problem, and realized I had an inordinate amount of spam comments. Once I deleted all of them, I was able to export a complete .xml file.

I receive this error message, too. I can, however, export SOME authors but I can't export them all. This is frustrating as I'd like to ensure that all of our stuff is backed up.

Attempting to create the WP export file returns a 404 page with this URL:

http://www.****.com/***/wp-admin/export.php?author=all&submit=Download+Export+File&download=true

I have verified that sufficient memory is allocated to create the file. I've tested it in several browsers with the same results.

A solution would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I am trying to export a WXR file from my old wordpress blog to import to a new one. Everytime I try to download the Export file, it doesn't give me all of the posts in should! There are approx 6,000 posts and when I export the WXR file, it says the file is finished downloading, but, when I check the file it only has about 3000 posts? and I know that it's not the full file because the closing
is nowhere to be seen!

Anyone know how to fix this? I would be very grateful and would it appreciate it a lot!

Thanks in advance

I'm having this same problem. I really hope the WordPress team would look into this. Perhaps we should raise this in the Ideas section too.

Though my guess is that a database export-import (instead of the WXR/XML file upload) would fix this problem.
