1) will v2.9 offer the flexibility of different post layouts / styles. this is what was written in a P2 blurb = " Custom post types will be available in WordPress 2.9. " or are they talking about a feature using the P2 theme and available to v2.9

don't mean to change the subject here. trying to do something like that. having two layouts with ALMOST the same look, the main difference is the way the post lays out. a two blog solution would solve this.

i found a blog that is doing it the following way.

1) layout #1 = domain.com

2) layout #2 = special.domain.com

will look into hive but also interested in the above url solution...

i currently have three blogs, only two of which i am trying to use the same registered members for the two blogs. one is a main blog with tech news the other is a forum. at least im trying to make it a forum. but in order for me to do that, i need to be able to use the same members that registered on my main site so i can have them log in on the forum. they are under two different domain endings, .us and .info. the blog is .us and the forum will be a subdomain of the .info. is there a way i can use one database of registered users for two sites? if yes, how? and if there is a plugin, which one? if not, would someone be able to make one for me? i am not that good with php programming and wp programming.

thanks alot.

Hi, I am not an expert in WP, I just use it for my blog and I like it. The question is, can I have somehow more blogs within one WP? Lets say my blog is http://www.myblog.com - runs on WP. and I want to have one extra on it with url: family.myglog.com. Do I need to instal WP into family folder and have two WP on the hosting, or is it possible to run just one=just one admin.

Thanks for the answer, the question is probably stupid, but I just cant find the answer anywhere.

hi there,
I am the developer of the plugin. The connect2site plugin connects to a single database. It does a custom query outside any loop and fetches the results using various criteria. I haven't tested it with MU. I guess there are some differences with standard WP. I will check it out.

Should I just give up and run each blog using a seperate install of WP?

If it's just a few, I would run separate wp installs. You will spend more time trying to patch something together to run them all with one install (and then maintaining that) than you will maintaining separate installs. With the auto upgrade feature, auto plugin install, and auto theme install coming in 2.8, it's really simple to manage multiple installs...the only drawback in duplicate code, but since the wp code is around 2mb, that's not even an issue.

Honestly, you may find WPMU easier to work with and manage, but it's overkill for a handful of blogs.

It can be harder to setup than either of the multi-blog things you've tried, and you would have to reinstall your main blog. It's a seperate program, not something to hook into WP.

Each blog would have different content and a different look. I'd like to avoid a seperate WP install though as it takes more to maintain and it's just cleaner to have one install and run all blogs from that.

I have several blogs that I would like to run using 1 WP install. Blog1 is already up and running. I would like to start Blog2 and Blog3. I've read lots in this forum about running multi-blogs, even tried WP-Hive & Stephen Rider's Virtual Multiblog but couldn't get either to work. Both shut down my existing blog. I'm sure the error was on my part but I just couldn't get either to work.

It's been suggested that I try WPMU but others have said that this app is only for those who are willing to spend time learning code & maintaining a blog farm. I am really only looking for a simple way to maintain several blogs.

Any suggestions, feedback, pointers to achieve this? Should I just give up and run each blog using a seperate install of WP?

I'm debating between using wp-hive or WPMU for a small student blog network and this might be exactly what I'm looking for to bring in elements from the rest of the network on the main blog site. But if this is specifically for separate databases, I'm assuming it wouldn't work for wp-hive? (those multiple installs share the same database) is there any glaring reason why this wouldn't work for MU?

Hey samboll,

Yes, they're both Mac apps, and standard text editors. They're both listed in the Glossary link above.

Turns out, that wasn't the problem. The error was coming from the database itself, specifically the wphive_hosts table. Unless you disable it, wp-hive will automatically add new hosts or IP's if they're pointed at Wordpress.

In other words, I went to load my site on the new server by it's IP address, wp-hive thought it was a new host, and added that host and the table prefix to wphive-hosts. So, I wound up with a row in wphive-hosts with an IP address in the 'host' field and '69.' in the 'prefix' field. I'm guessing that wp-hive overrode the 'table_prefix' value in wp-config.php, sending '69.' to the database function, consequently throwing that error.

I hope that all makes sense. If anybody's seeing this error while using wp-hive, check the wphive-hosts table to see if any of the prefix values in that table contain bad characters.

Thanks.

I tried uploading a brand new wp-config.php file from two different editors (BBedit and Smultron), commenting out the $table_prefix line, deleting the line, etc. Still the same error. Anybody know what's up with that? It's the default value, 'wp_'. I'm using wp-hive, but I don't know what that would do. It seems to just be stuck on that one line.

Hi --
In installing Wordpress 2.7 on a Textdrive/Joyent server, I've run into a problem. I've installed Wordpress many times with no problems :), but I can't figure this one out.

Basically, I set up the wp-config.php with no problems, and the program connects happily to the database. I know this because I can alter the settings and it tells me it can't connect to the database.

However, when I do the installation (i.e. go to http://mtplummer.com/pv/wp-admin/install.php), it returns the following error:

ERROR: $table_prefix in wp-config.php can only contain numbers, letters, and underscores.

But I just have the standard 'wp_' prefix! Any thoughts?

thanks,
Matt
