1. Plugin that would help you set up at least a spreadsheet per page (per group) and works with WPMU 2.8.4a as well: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-table-reloaded/
2. Plugin to help you get bird's eye view of the 50 or so pages of your installation and works with WPMU 2.8.4a as well in my installs: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/pagemash/

You would have to ask the Super Admin to upload/install the plugins for you because to ensure security of whole WPMU installation, SAdmins do not allow anyone to upload just any plugin. SAdmins may or may not allow you to "Activate" the plugins once it's installed in the system, it all depends on the policies of your IT department.

Assuming SAdmin assigned you Administrator Role for your sub-blog, just follow instructions in the URL's of the plugins I listed above - note especially table ID numbers you make that you will be assigning respectively to each group.

Hi merci! Thanks so much for the quick reply. As it stands now, the school's IT dept is the super admin, and we were given a sub-blog of the MU installation. Pages sound like a great idea.

Do you have any other advice or info about plug-ins that you think might be helpful to accomplish the goals we outlined above?

Thanks for your help!

Wordpress MU account

WPMU is definitely the way to go, one sub-blog for each of the 50 organizations, assuming they gave you a WPMU installation and you can set the privacy options for all blogs so only the Super Admin, that's you, can see what they have in their proposals.

... or were you give only one sub-blog of the WPMU installation to handle all the data? If that's the case, you can assign a Page for each of the 50 organizations and set each page to Private and assign passwords for each of them. No one else but the Admin and respective member for that page can see the Page.

I can see a variety of ways to implement what you want. It all depends on whether you have the WPMU installation or just the sub-blog to that WPMU installation.

I'm looking to streamline a budget process using Wordpress attachments, google forms, google spreadsheets, and other resources you might suggest.

My problem

I run a Student Senate committee that decides how to divide up a pot of money among the hundreds of school-wide events that have been proposed by 50-ish student groups.

First, each of the groups submits to us 1) financial records of their past events, 2) their projected needs for each of the events they plan to repeat this semester, and 3) a description of why each event is important for the student body. (Currently, they email us an Excel spreadsheet and a Word doc. Replacing these with an embedded google form or spreadsheet would be nice.)

Second, we help each organization revise its submissions. (So, we must be able collaborate on a shared document -- e.g. a Google spreadsheet -- but ideally, the organization leaders would NOT be able to view one another's submissions. I don't think that Google forms and spreadsheets have yet gotten that fine level of access control).

Third, we aggregate their finalized requests into a proposed budget. (Google spreadsheets has a tool called "ImportRange" that could help here).

Fourth, we try to make a fair decision about which events won't be funded at the requested amount, by consulting 1) the groups' submissions, 2) our guidelines for what are reasonable event expenditures.

My question
So we need form submissions, fined-grained privacy controls, and spreadsheet capability, all rolled into one. I'd like to be able to handle all these tasks through the Wordpress MU account that our school provided us -- probably by embedding google forms, spreadsheets, etc. Problem is, I've never used wordpress before.

So, my questions:

Is there something better out there than google forms and spreadsheets for this sort of work?

Can you recommend any specific Wordpress plugins?

Any specific recommendations for how the technology can lighten my logistical burden?

Thanks!

Andrew

I would try getting 2.0.11 to work
but really no version that old is going to be secure

have you thought about maybe using a free mysql service and connect remotely?
That way you could run a recent version

Not totally clear by what you mean in your post above.
What do you mean by copy of "working files"? The theme or database?
What do you mean by "lost the site online"? Blank page but posts still listed in admin or blank page and posts no longer listed in admin?
Go back and choose default theme, if you can see your posts there then:
1. download another copy of the theme you prefer and re-upload.
2. if you made the theme from scratch ... surprised you didn't back it up.
Curious what was the script you deleted in header.php

Found out was a script I'd added to the header.php and when I removed that the site was back there! Stupidly, I forgot to do a copy of the working files, becasuse I have done it again, lost the site online, what is more, my theme is not showing in admin panel even though it is there on the server. Now I just have a totally white page and no page source to check on. Got any ideas? and thanks in advance

Suddenly it has gone.NO ERROR MESSAGE AT ALL(eg page not found etc) just the orange background from the theme's CSS( which I'd created it myself)Admin is fine and all files on sever. Been working on localhost, uploading when working correctly, still have it fine locally and tried to delete theme files and install from upload but no difference.</p> <p>Strangest of all, it does show in my Firefox(but only in Firefox)and not just in cache as changes I make are also showing online! Admin at server is baffled, says he has not done anything, but he installed another theme to see if that showed, and sure enough it did, on all browswers!. So must be something to do with my theme but it was showing ok for 2 weeks - can someone please help me, this is for my study and I have to have it online!</p>

Hi Guys,

I just did a quick search and couldn't see that this exact topic has been covered before. If it has, my apologies!

My situation (briefly) is this - I have setup a small folio site for a group of students. Each student needs to be able to edit their own page and sub-page/s, but should not be allowed to do anything else (include editing pages owned by others).

I'm wondering what the most appropriate permission schema would be to enable this.

The problem I am having at present is that when students create their own pages, the 'owner' attribute is set correctly (and they can then edit their own pages properly). However, to get them rolling I have started creating most of their pages, and so need to change the 'author' attribute to the student to enable them to edit it. When I try to do this, though, I can only change it to the two users with administrator access.

I installed Role Manager 2.2.2 Plugin hoping to be able to easily create a 'student' permission, but having done that, get the above problem.

Is there a standard WP user level I can use? What would the best solution be?

Thanks, Jeremy.

Alex King's "Share This" seems cool, and I like the icons. With that said, however, there's still no universal "share this" icon like there is for RSS, and even the RSS icon is a mystery to most users. I'm quite sure that many people who use social bookmarking sites already know how to submit articles, and I'm pretty sure that I won't be converting anyone over to social bookmarking (maybe they'll appeal to the general user sometime in the short future).

I think I have them there just as a sort of graphical distraction, as my site is really full of words. You'll notice that I'm trying to incorporate a thumbnail graphic in front of each post; maybe that'll ease reading all that text for a little bit.

In terms of layout refinement, I've been having a lot of trouble recently. For some reason, I can't change any of my widgets or site files without FTPing in and changing it manually. What I mean is that the admin backend can't seem to modify site files; it can only modify MySQL queries to let me make new posts. I've been documenting my troubles at this thread:

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/105353?replies=29

Thanks for your comments, and let me know if you can think of a solution!

Hi. I like the theme you've chosen, but I wonder about all those social bookmarking icons... I've debated about the pros and cons of those on my own site.

With so many icons, they detract from your design, and I think people tend to just scan past them, even if they use the sites you have icons for. As a Digg and delicious user, if I want to save something, I tend to just click my own browser bookmarklet, even if a blog post has social bookmarking buttons.

What about something like Alex King's "share this" icon? I'm considering using this on my own site.

@goodman48

How are the social bookmarking icons messed up? They seem to work fine for me, but I've only tested on Flock and IE7.
