hi, I was wondering if in your next version you could make an option to link to specific quotes (ex: http://calenfretts.com/quotes/?quoteID=7), and also to take querystring params (ex: http://calenfretts.com/quotes/?qp=7&rows=7). unless your current version already does this and I'm missing something! :)

I am having an issue with Stray Random Quotes and Youtube.

If I have Stray Random Quotes on a page that also has a youtube video, while watching the video, it will being to skip. This seems to happen at the same time Stray Random Quotes switches to another quote. I turned off the widget and the video played fine.

Is anyone else experiencing this? How do I go about fixing it?

I am using the generic youtube embed code, and stray random quotes is being used in a widget.

I seem to be having the same problem. I don't think the documentation is up-to-date either. Maybe it's the new upgrade to 2.8?

This looks like it might be a very versatile widget when working properly and I'd certainly be willing to support it if it gets fixed.

Well, despite upgrading and downgrading and deactivating and reactivating, I haven't yet gotten my categories back. What can I do? This really stinks. I use SRQ all over my site, and I have some wonderful new testimonials from clients that I really want to put up, but they're not working right!!!

No obviously not...! Quotes and their categories are safe in the database. Removing the options would reset the layout settings, if that's what you mean by formatting. Anyway if you go to the "remove" page in quotes>remove you'll see that "remove all quotes" and "remove all options" are different check-boxes.
Backup your database first if you want to be extra safe (via phpmyadmin or using a plugin like wp-dbmanager.)

However, since you had the very latest version before, I'd be surprised if this downgrading business helps at all... And I am disappointed because I can't imagine what your problem with the plugin is... except maybe some conflict with other scripts or plugins you might have recently added or edited?

Consider that on the SRQ page there is also a 1.9.8 revision that is brand new, although I am not sure it will fix anything for you.

keep me updated.
ciao

Hi Ico, I was using the very latest version of SRQ; I'd been updating religiously, usually the same day, sometimes within days. I have 1.8.6 on disk from doing a backup from a few months ago.

Thank you for the info on finding old versions at wordpress.org.

If I delete SRQ 1.9.7's options and folder, will I lose all the quotes and categories and formatting I already have entered?

There is no need to go back to 1.8.6. ALL old versions are available from the plugin pages here at the Wordpress repository (Follow the "Other versions" link under the version number on the top right of the plugin page).

If you decide to downgrade: using the remove feature of the plugin deactivate the plugin AND delete its options from the database, then manually delete its folder.

But before you do please tell me: what version of SRQ were you running before upgrading to 1.9.7? I suspect it was quite a old version.
If it was 1.8.6 or around that number you could solve your problems by downgrading to 1.9.5 first.

Let me know.

I passionately love this plugin, but I have a problem. Since I updated to 1.9.7, it does not recognize the old quotes categories and does not list the new author, source, or category. The new quote also does not play nicely with the old ones -- it captures the first 1.5 sentences and merges them with the remainder of the next quote: http://peacockandpaisley.com/clients-say/

I'm not updating this site to 2.8; I'm waiting until 2.8.1 because of the laundry list of problems others have had. But I don't have a copy of the previous version of SRQ; is there a way I could get one and downgrade to it and keep all my quotes and formatting and everything intact? I use SRQ extensively on this site and others. It's a great tool and gets 2 thumbs up from me!

Thanks for your help!

I am aware of the problem... actually and I have been banging my head against it for a while.

upon activation the plugin makes a comparison based on the version number after which some settings are created if the version number is older. The comparison for reasons unknown doesn't work (possibly a PHP or SQL bug) and some of the settings are overwritten even if they exist already.

This problem is yet unsolved but with version 1.9.6 it won't repeat itself because I disabled the comparison. So please download version 1.9.6. Let me know if it helps.

I've been using this plugin (1.9.5) for a little while now (very useful by the way!) but I've noticed that the configuration value for the after_source (i.e. the supplied HTML to be used if no author is supplied) does not appear to survive deactivation and subsequent reactivation of this plugin - all other configuration values are retained, but this field is reset to no value (i.e. blank). This had been confusing me for some time as I had initially set everything up correctly, tested it, and then a few days later deactivated the plugin during debugging of other issues, and when I re-enabled it, suddenly the layout of my quotes was not exactly how I had expected - took me a while to it figure out since only one of the configuration parameters appears to be behaving this way.

this sometimes happens when after some editing the management page tries to display quotes from a category that does not exists anymore, or from a nth page that does not exists. You can fix this by changing from which category to display quotes by default. This change can be applied either on the same manage page or on the settings page.
Let me know if this fixes your problem.

...probably it is a javascript conflict. Try maybe to disable your other plugins or the scripts on the page until you find out which is causing the problem. Also take a look at the console or at firebug for error messages if you can. If you installed 1.9.5 recently, try also clearing the browser cache so that the new ajax files are loaded.

I have a Danish translation - stray-quotes-da_DK.mo - that is not loading. The suffix da_DK is the correct one to use; it works ok with other plugins. (The poedit template that I used for the localization works with other localizations.)

I have tried to rename the mo file to da_DK.mo, but it did not help.

I have checked both on a blog running on a subdomain and one running on the main domain.

Any suggestions?

The code you used is correct. It works in my tests.

What do you mean by "nothing shows up"? If it didn't work, it would show "
[random-quote categories="tagline" noajax="true"]
" instead of the tagline, and you would know something isn't working.

Please make sure that there are not other html elements loaded before the quote (via quotes>settings) that cause the quote to be hidden. For example a <div> or a <p> before the quotes could cause the tagline to slip out of the header and disappear.

Hi

I have tried adding the quotes to the tagline just as you describe here: http://www.italyisfalling.com/cool-things-you-can-do-with-stray-random-quotes/

But for some reason I can't see any taglines. The shortcode is activated for bloginfo, and I have addded the [random-quote categories="tagline" noajax="true"] to the tagline. But nothing shows up. (my category name is "tagline")
Why doesn't it work, any ideas?

Of course you're right. And the functions you linked to are golden! At least for me who never studied any kind of programming language, and only navigates into PHP by sight.

Frettsy, thanks a million for this post... I wish I had read it before I released the latest revision 1.8.3 yesterday :)

in fact, you're right! The help page is misleading. Thanks for pointing this out. Since I just released version 1.8.3 I will update the help page silently for the moment.
