Nevermind - figured out why the static option wasn't available ... Doesn't completely solve the problem though. Still forces folks to go to http://victoriaklein.net/blog/ to get to my main (non-blog) page ... :(

Thanks for the help, esmi, but I don't need to move my blog at all & it already has its own directory. My current website @ http://victoriaklein.net/ is nothing but HTML - I simply want to create pages in Wordpress for each page that is already on the main website (About, Writing ... etc.). Then, my Wordpress-run site could function as my full website.

Looks like the easiest way to do it might be http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page ... but there's one problem. My Settings/Reading/ page doesn't have the option to select a static page ... UH OH! How did that happen!?

I recently updated to 2.8.6 - does that have anything to do with it? I've never used the feature before, so I'm not sure how long it hasn't been there.

Is it fair to say that no one modifies the xhtml/php 'pages' that get created by WP (not the dynamic ones, but the "static" pages) by changing the raw file itself? I was assuming that I'd be able to modify parts of the page the way I want, but was unsure how to proceed or where to find the info - clearly I need to do some reading and experimenting.

Are you saying I could have a template for a specific page? And that would allow me to manage the complete "custom" xhtml on each page that I have now on individual html files, using the WP admin interface?

Thanks for the guidance samboll - I'll look into the codex link you provided and come back if I have more questions. I appreciate it sir!

I think the easiest would be to create your own static page templates and use wp for the whole site - that way, as you intimated, you could easily do everything with wp's admin
http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Creating_Your_Own_Page_Templates

Hi all, I'm new to Wordpress and am impressed so far. I have a question related to integration of WP

I started spending time with CSS and XHTML, and came across the Keep It Simple template from Styleshout.com. I started by using it to create a small personal site, mostly to learn and play around with the technology. I got that all working (but haven't finished with content yet). I also haven't setup a Domain name - I'm just hosting it myself on a Ubuntu LAMP machine. Works fine.

Then I found WordPress, and realized that this Template had been ported to WP by Themelabs. I'm trying to integrate the two things - my psuedo static site using the CSS template, and the WordPress Blog. I have several pages that don't need to be dynamically generated, and the raw template has areas for things that I haven't figured out how to do in WP yet. I don't want my whole site to resemble a blogsite.

I have seen that "static" Pages can be used in WP, but I'm not sure to what extent I can edit those using the Admin page, or how much I'll be able to change them manually. I have a Home page, an Interests page that leads to several sub pages, a Blog page which pulls up WP, and then a Photos page (I'd like to use Coppermine or Gallery 2) with sub-pages, and a full About page. However, doing it this way, I haven't been able to integrate the two menus - one from the static pages containing the options above, along with the WP menu (which only shows Home (WP home) and About (WP About)).

Is this crazy? Should I be using WP Pages, or can I easily integrate these two things thsi way?

I want to understand what the options are and, if possible, how I might basically accomplish either approach, so I can make decision based on all the info. So I'd appreciate a little explanation, rather than just "Use WP" responses.

Thanks in advance for your help!

if i do NOT set my home page to a "static" page, then the "blog" page, containing ALL of my posts, is automatically created. I don't have to manually create a blog page.

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to put a front page on a new website under development, but as you can guess I am experiencing a problem, and the problem is the home page is still showing up on the posts page I defined in the admin section.

Here's what I've done to make my front static page :
1. Duplicate my index.php template page to home.php, and added the "template name: Home" tag at the top.
2. Created 2 empty pages named Home ("Home" template) and News 'Default template).
3. Whent to Settings > Reading and choose static pages :
- FRONT PAGE : Home
- POSTS PAGE : News

So I thought I did everything as I was supposed to ... but I doesn't work. The posts page and the front page shows the same page : the home one.

Thank you,
Nicolas.

What I cannot seem to grok is how both of these are referring to the global list of posts and getting different results -

Loop pulling the first 5 entries from the "blog" page

"MiniLoop" pulling from the text I have entered via the CMS from the page being called and used as Home NOT from post entries

Additionally for MiniLoop:

- if "numberposts" is anything but "1" it pulls the text form the CMS entry page the same number of times (repeats it over and over)

- "Pages" don't have "Categories", why is "category=1" grabbing the copy as explained above?

Static home page setup.

Calling the loop and the titles of the 10 most recent blog posts within a div.

Have another div where I would very much like to pump text from the page being used as static from within admin/pages/edit/*pagename* so that that site editors are able to update content in said div without having to use admin/appearance/editor or the PHP file itself.

Does this require and additional instance of The Loop? My attempts have provided screwy results (PHP novice) - both additional Loop and within same instance of Loop.

Guessing there is a simple an appropriate PHP call to make this happen but having a devil of a time conceiving of it.

Ahh, Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna try moving it to a DEV environment and see if that fixes it.

Currently I'm running all this locally

This is likely the issue as you have to take special steps to make them work, see: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Installing_WordPress_on_your_own_Computer

Also try a forum search for permalinks and whatever you are using on your home server.

I'm having some issues getting permalinks working correctly. The site is set up so the front page displays a static page, currently the "Home" page (home.php, template name "home"). I have numerous other pages set up as well as a blog (blog.php, template name "blog"). As long as I have my permalinks set to "default" (ugly) everything works fine. As soon as I give them ANY kind of custom structure I get nothing but 404s.

I've read everything about Making Your Blog Appear in a Non-Root Folder as well as everything here on permalinks. I've done some searching around as well but thus far am not coming up with anything helpful.

I'm running WordPress 2.8.5, which I manually upgraded to from an old 2.0.4 installation. Not sure if that would cause issues or not but it's probably good to note. Currently I'm running all this locally but I should have a dev site set up soon, when I do I'll provide a link.

This is my first go at developing a WordPress site so if I'm leaving out some important details I apologize, just let me know if anyone needs any more info on my situation or has some thoughts/ideas for solutions. Thanks all!

Try adding the following just before the start of the Loop in your custom page template:

<?php
$paged = (get_query_var('paged')) ? get_query_var('paged') : 1;
$args= array(
	'category_name' => 'Services',
	'paged' => $paged
);
query_posts($args);
?>

Here is my issue and I can't seem to find anything in the Forums that specifically answer it...please help! :)

I have setup my site to use page navigation. On the "Services" page, I want to have some static content at the top...and below that content...any posts that are in the SERVICES category ONLY. I've created a template and got the static content to work, but how do I get the posts from ONE category to appear below?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

You'll need to create a custom page template for your theme that doesn't include any call to your sidebar(s).

I am wondering what you need to do in order to remove the sidebar on ONLY one page within a site. For instance, I don't want the static home page to have a sidebar, but I want the sidebar there for the rest of the pages. In this instance I'm using PureType theme, but for future reference is there a general bit of coding I can play around with make this happen?

Thanks in advance and please pretend like you're speaking to a child with your response because a lot of this is new to me...thanks!!!!
