Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I Googled "faux background css" and came up with the linked article below, followed the instructions and that did the trick: http://www.ehow.com/how_4488586_install-faux-columns.html

I would like the left and right sidebars to have the tan #CCCC99 background color extend fully down the page to match whatever height the article in the middle section happens to be.

You and just about every other web designer on the planet. There's no way to do this easily via CSS other than using a faux background image that contains the two coloured blocks at the correct width. Or setting the wrapper background to the color that you want and placing the content on top if that.

Please see http://tomesker.com/blackburn/wordpress/keynote. I would like the left and right sidebars to have the tan #CCCC99 background color extend fully down the page to match whatever height the article in the middle section happens to be. I've tried adding:

background-color: #CCCC99;

to art-contentLayout and also to art-sidebar2 in style.css and fiddled with the CSS a number of other places with no effect.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Hello again!

I manged to solve the problem, I checked a back up copy of the page.php I made a couple of weeks ago and found an error.

For those that might have the same problem read this:

<?php comments_template(); ?>

</div>
</div>

<?php endwhile; ?>

The two div tags were missing but I have no idea why that should have cause the problem. Inserting them worked for me.

Hi,

I am using a modified Neo Sapien which was fine until I tried to enable comments on my posts. All the control panel functions were set to do this but the fault turned out to be a missing single.php file.

I uploaded one and that works fine but when I click on any page but the home page the right hand sidebars shoot down under that page.

Any ideas how to modify the code to resolve that?

Site is here

It is not difficult to link different templates or child templates to your main theme.

You simply have to include the files like if your footer or header or even sidebars are different from one page to the next. When you create your pages, you will be able to select the template you created and whatever text or images on your page that you published will show up with the template you wanted.

Example of basic template files:

Page 1 (with 1 sidebar):

header.php
sidebar.php
index.php
footer.php

Page 2 ( with 2 sidebars):
header.php
sidebar.php
sidebar2.php
content.php (<--- like your index.php page, but it is the new template to include both sidebars)
footer.php

(you will have a different index template - I do not name any content pages like index2, rather content.php. and then your two sidebars.)

Ok so i've had a bit more of a look around and i think i have made my references more exact.
I am calling the sidebar as such

<?php get_sidebar('sidebar-main'); ?>

the functions.php file is as so:

<?php
/**
* @package WordPress
* @subpackage Classic_Theme
*/
if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') )
register_sidebar(array('name'=>'')); ?>
<?php if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') )
register_sidebar(array('name'=>'sidebar-main')); ?>
<?php if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') )
register_sidebar(array('name'=>'sidebar-events')); ?>
<?php if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') )
register_sidebar(array('name'=>'sidebar-mission')); ?>
<?php if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') )
register_sidebar(array('name'=>'sidebar-services')); ?>
<?php if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') )
register_sidebar(array('name'=>'sidebar-resources')); ?>

And I can edit the sidebars in admin ok, but only the first sidebar shows on the pages.

Please can someone help?

In your pages, you just need
<?php get_sidebar(); ?>

What do i put in the barckets of get sidebar to call each individual sidebar?

In your pages, you just need
<?php get_sidebar(); ?>

Then in your sidebar.php file, call each sidebar like this:
<ul class="sidebar_list">
<?php if (!function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar(main)) : ?>

		<?php if (!function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar(events)) : ?>

First of all, thank you so much for responding to my noob question. :)

I'll look at those links to clarify, but from what I understand, theoretically I could have each page set up on different templates with their own header content footer, etc and I would plug the html and css tags of the pages I designed into the appropriate areas like the original page?
Would it be difficult to link the different templated pages together?

Thanks again!

Hi, hoping someone can help.

I have created a site with 6 sidebars names:
sidebar.php
sidebar-events.php
sidebar-main.php
sidebar-mission.php
sidebar-resources.php
sidebar-services.php

I have registered them in the functions.php flie which reads as follows:

<?php
/**
* @package WordPress
* @subpackage Classic_Theme
*/

automatic_feed_links();

if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') )
	register_sidebar(array(
	'before_widget' => '<li id="%1$s" class="widget %2$s">',
'after_widget' => '</li>',
'before_title' => '',
'after_title' => '',
	));

?>
<?php if ( function_exists ('register_sidebar')) {
    register_sidebar ('main');
} ?>
<?php if ( function_exists ('register_sidebar')) {
    register_sidebar ('events');
} ?>
<?php if ( function_exists ('register_sidebar')) {
    register_sidebar ('mission');
} ?>
<?php if ( function_exists ('register_sidebar')) {
    register_sidebar ('services');
} ?>
<?php if ( function_exists ('register_sidebar')) {
    register_sidebar ('resources');
} ?>

And all the sidebars show up in the widgets section of the admin area.

Each page calls the appropriate sidebar using `
<?php get_sidebar(6); ?>`

I have tried using
<?php include ('sidebar-resources.php') ?>
and
<?php get_sidebar(resources); ?>
But the only sidebar that i can get to show is the default sidebar (with dynamic content)

Any ideas?

Oh the site is http://www.stjamescarlisle.org.uk

You sound like you would like to vary how your site looks from page to page. This is done with your themes templates.

http://codex.wordpress.org/Templates
http://codex.wordpress.org/Stepping_Into_Templates

If you want three columns, you will want to specify that you need 2 sidebars

sidebar1
sidebar2

http://codex.wordpress.org/Customizing_Your_Sidebar
You will have to eventually put the WordPress dynamic include for your sidebar so you can put your widgets in each to make them unique.

If your other page might only include 1 sidebar, you will have to make another content template and sidebar file. Then, for the page you want to apply the new template, there is a dropdown menu for you to select what template you want to use for it.

Hi, everybody, I need something cleared up for me about Wordpress.
From what I understand, when you want to convert a site into WP, you essentially have to break it up into the php components (index, header, sidebar, etc) and insert the appropriate css.

Now my question is, if I choose a 3 column layout, do the additional pages I create in WP HAVE to follow the same template?
Also, what if I want to change the sizes or numbers of columns for certain pages or have different feature images? Do I have to create a side bar php and somehow tell the page to get it?

I believe this site was made in WP and does everything I'm trying to explain: http://www.populationmedia.org/. Could someone explain to me how they managed to do this? It pretty much follows the exact format I want for my site. I would really and TRULY appreciate any help with this. :)
Thank you.

All of the WP default widgets are available to move to the sidebars. As a test I moved a widget to each of my sidebars, however when I preview my site there are no sidebars available. I did not have any problems with the Thesis theme, I did not experience any problems until I installed the Section Widget.

Do you think reinstalling my theme would fix the problem? I hesitate to make any changes that might make things worst.

if you run wp 2.8 or higher you shoul find your previous (disabled) widgets at the bottom of the widget page; you only should bring them back to the sidebar.
If they aren't , than they were been deleted from database due to theme compatibility issues...

hello,

your theme is not abled for widgets.
you could try to search something about "theme widgetization" that needs anyway coding capabilities.
Alternatively, change theme.

I am using the Thesis theme. I wanted to customize my sidebars to display sub-pages on specific pages so I installed the Section Widget. I wasn't able to get the widget to work, never visable in my sidebar. I tried solutions found in the DIYthemes and Section Widget forums and user guides. No luck. I deleted the Section Widget plug-in hoping to try something different or as a last resort try from the beginning.

I now have no sidebars at all, nothing and I don't know what to do. Is it time to re-install my theme?

Don' t cut and paste from Word; it brings all kinds of crazy text formatting code into your blog and throws IE off. If you must, paste out of NotePad.

But first, repaste your last two blog entries and then check in IE.
