Have you tried:

- deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

- switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems?

MichaelH

Many thanks for that. Here's my status as a result:

1) Email / Admin Verification
Okay I'm opting for one, although I'm still unclear as to why you can't use both.

2) Invitation Code
Thank you for clearing that one up.

3) Captcha (simple)
Thank you, all seems to be working fine now.

4) Disclaimer / License Agreement / Privacy Policy
Thank you, all done.

6) Custom user notification email
Thank you, I can figure this out now.

7) Custom admin notification email
Okay thanks, although I'm still a bit confused about this one. If this is an admin notification, then why are you saying it's helpful for customising what users get in their email verification?

I think I sort of get the idea of the replacement keys, so I'm happy to experiment in order to work it out (as you suggest), but I'm unclear as to what task an admin notification email is supposed to be doing.

Overall though, that's almost a clean sweep of probs. Much gratitude on your direction MichaelH, thank you!

1. Don't think you need both

2. To keep track of where the user got the 'idea' to register--maybe you sent a email blast with an 'invite code' and you want to know if that campaign was successful.

3. But where is the wp_login.php file? -- it's in the wordpress 'main' or 'root' folder.

4. What about terms of service usage.. see wordpress.com terms of service http://en.wordpress.com/tos/

5. Probably use the auto complete queries in conjunction with the registration email

6. Disable the plugin. Make sure you allow users to register, logout and then register with a new email address then check that email address to see the resulting email. Normally it looks like:
Username: mr.me
Password: PeQ@ssdfe3Q5fjO$
http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-login.php

7. Think of the replacement keys as tokens so you don't have to hardcode the values. For instance %siteurl% is the url to your site. This section is helpful if you want to customize what users get in their email for a notification when registering.

Before going much further, you might deactive Register Plus, then get conversant with what WordPress does without a plugin. That way you will know what you would want a plugin to 'change' in terms of your registration process.

Greetings Beautiful WP people

Set-up
I'm running (or hope to run) 'Register Plus' along with 'Member Access'.

Objective
My aim is to have some premium content restricted to registered members only; and also to capture user contact info, so that I can communicate with them.

My Background and Gratitude
I'm not a coder, although I'm quite enjoying trying to figure it out as I deal with each prob in turn! (Maybe I should take a course). So, apologies if my queries are a bit noddy (inane), and thanks so much in anticipation of your patience, attention and help.

Problems Overview
Anyway, okay... I have the following probs with Register Plus.
1) Email / Admin Verification
2) Invitation Code
3) Captcha
4) Disclaimer / License Agreement / Privacy Policy
5) Auto-Complete Queries
6) Custom user notification email
7) Custom admin notification email

Yep, that's almost everything, (I'm not going to bother with the CSS)!

1) Email / Admin Verification
I would like to operate both these: email verification is good for preventing fake registrations, and I'd also like to manage/moderate users.

But I think, from reading others' probs with this, that you can't. Is that right? If so what's the best option?

2) Invitation Code
I have no idea what this is or might mean, so I don't know what to do with it (or not). I can't find any definition of this on WP.

3) Captcha (simple)
For now I can't test register on my site since captcha doesn't recognise the correctly entered password.

I see that I have to insert the code
<?php session_start(); ?>
into the top line of the wp_login.php file. But where is the wp_login.php file?

It's not in my editor, nor can I find it among any of my site's folders and files. Again I can't find this info anywhere in WP.

4) Disclaimer / License Agreement / Privacy Policy
Can anyone suggest some good models for these, that work for blogs? (I'm thinking that once I'm set up I will add bbPress, which might be relevant).

5) Auto-Complete Queries
I can (as a non-coder) work out what this does, and I suppose it's desirable rather than necessary... but it would be nice to work out what the heck to do with the suggestion! :)

What's a query and how do I link it to the registration page? Where's the registration page for that matter?

6) Custom user notification email
In order to work out how I can personalise this I need to know what a wordpress email verification looks like. I have no idea what it contains so I don't know what I can or should write.

But I can't fnd any examples either in WP or on the net. I could try registering on someone else's site, but then how do I know I'm getting a WP email verification? And as described above, neither can I register on my own site myself after logging out.

7) Custom admin notification email
Where it says (on the CMS) 'Replacement Keys' - what's that all about? If I want to send myself an email to alert me that someone has registered, why would I need to write a special message (other than the supplied username and email addy?

Am I missing the point here?

Like I say, apologies if these are a bit dull as queries go, but who knows? Since WP is such an amazing tool, I guess more non-coder folk like me will be arriving here.

Perhaps complete answers to all these points will be helpful for others like me in the future.

Anyway, thanks very much for your help.
Bestest
S

Hi WP users/bloggers,

I'm not looking for any help registering for or setting up a domain, what i'm after (if anyone can comment on this) is to find a provider for a free domain name.

Had a freebie one that was setup for a year, and that's expired today without warning.

Looked at a few providers of free domains (googled), and although i'm not hesitant on signing up, i'd prefer registering with a trusted or recommended provider, so ideally all i need here is some personal recommendations on where to register for a free domain name.

For the sake of keeping this thread tidy and not self-promoting, please post all or any links in this format.

site.com (no http or www)

Appreciate anyone taking there time to make a suggestion..

add_filter('register', 'change_register');
function change_register($link) {
$link = str_replace("Register", "Sign up", $link);

I've tried playing with these and can't get them to do what I want

In essence, what I'm trying to do is with the top of the sidebar, I want (plain language coding) -

if (is_home()) OR if not a user
~ do this ~
then
~ this ~ (if user or not)

I can get it to work with the is_home command() on it's own, and I can get it to work with the !is_user_logged_in() on its own, but when I try to run the || (or) php in the middle of them I get a T_syntax (OR) php error and the sidebar fails to load.

It's starting to drive me nuts because I want the condition to simply be -
If it's the home page or it's not a logged-in user (on any page or post), then show the sign up form

Why is this so difficult?

Can anyone help this grump old geezer?

Using WP 2.8.5

Some providers are protected from the use of injections in the mail function. So, they're generating an error when Subject string is malformed (with more than 1 line in string).

I’ve got traced an error up to class-phpmailer.php. There are a lot of lines with same code:

@mail($to, $this->EncodeHeader($this->SecureHeader($this->Subject))…

Solution is replace EncodeHeader and SecureHeader with each other places:

@mail($to, $this->SecureHeader($this->EncodeHeader($this->Subject))…

This solution works for me.

You can check this solution easely. Just remove @ symbol from @mail function, so you've gotta an errors like this:

Fatal error: mail() [<а hrеf='function.mail'>function.mail]: mail() - newline in Subject, possible injection, mail dropped in /home/httpd/vhosts/.../mail.inc on line 193

If not, then this solution is not for you.

Ok, I got it. I can just make a custom widget. You just have to make sure to initialize and register it.

I just copy and pasted the code of the original widget into functions.php, changed its name, edited it as desired, initialized, and registered it.

Hi I've searched for plugins & help on here for this but can't find anything that fits!

What I want to do is have a page with files to download on it, I'd like the site to be "public" generally but I want the users to be members of the site before they can download. SO if they're logged in that's fine they can go to the page & download, but if they're not logged in they need to register before they get to see the page.

Does anyone know if there's a suitable plugin or am I going to have to code it all?

... Alan =8^)

@james.ebert can you explain exactly where to put that code? I've been trying different plugins for this and none seem to be working.

In almost every case the user can log in but they can't logout.

Wow - thanks! Meanwhile, I started looking around at plugins and am trying to configure the PrefPass plugin.

If that doesn't work for me I'll use your code!

If someone registers for my site and then logs in, shouldn't it say (somewhere) "Welcome (name)!" and show that they are indeed logged in?

Currently it just keeps showing the form fields visible with the name and encrypted password still filled in.

Also it should provide a link to their profile so they can change their password.

Should I be using a custom widget or plugin to get this functionality?

I'd like to change a widget.

In the Recent Posts widget ( class WP_Widget_Recent_Posts extends WP_Widget ), only at most 15 of the most recent posts are displayed. I'd like to increase this number.

The variable in question is $number.... How do I change what this variable is set to? I don't want to hard code it into the class.

Should I make a personal plugin to change this? Not quite sure where to begin.

Either an answer or pointing to relevant thread would be appreciated.

There's a few threads dealing with this issue, but I haven't found one with a solution that doesn't involve changing the code in default-widgets.php.

Can I just re-write the recent posts widget class in the functions.php of my theme?

Thanks,
Peter.

That's the thing with spammers, the really good ones find ways to bypass firewalls and anti spam products.

When looking in your admin panel, see if all the comments come from the same IP address. If so, you can ban that person's IP from ever accessing your site.

Here's a YouTube video showing you how to do it through .htaccess.

You can also try a plugin called Tan Tan Noodles which does real well at defending against spam comments.

Hi there,

I'm receiving spam comments from a "user" who is not registered although this should be prohibited by my settings!
This "user" shows up with different user names at admin/comments and none of these names shows up at admin/users!

Thanks to Akismet I don't have these spam comments (which propagate a malicious site!) shown at my blog (IT-online).

How can a not registered user override the settings???

Since this "user" is not registered there is no email either...

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance...

Hey Shane!

Thank you for the link, however I went through these options before I posted this initially. It is interesting though, because only new users are unable to login, unless I manually go in and change their password. Also, when a newly registered user goes to retrieve their password it doesn't recognize the user name OR the email address although it is visible in the backend...

thanks!

Hello! =D

When a new user registers, they are unable to login with the username and password from their confirmation email. If I login as an admin I can see the user is there with a subscription role. But, if I change the password via the dashboard they can log in no problem. I've tried deactivating all plugins as well as clearing all cache and cookies and attempting on IE, FF, Chrome, and Safari to no avail. I have also tried restoring from a older database thinking that the tables may of somehow been corrupted.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this issue?

Much thanks in advance,
