If you install through the 'add a theme' menu by searching for it and installing it straight from the theme repository (instead of uploading it from your pc) you might have better luck. I'm experiencing exactly the same thing; zero priced item (for testing) but the link doesn't arrive at all (unless I log in and 'resend the receipt') and when it does, it fails with this error. I have managed to get it to download the file once successfully but most times it just fails as you describe.
