I don't have a ton of wp experience but it seems like I read somewhere recently that you can't just ftp upload files. The uploader adds them to the database so they can be inserted with various options, without the database info the media library can't see them.

Only ever used a Mac once or twice myself, and that was when working in tech support, so the references to systems 7 & 8 mean absolutely nothing to me...

Never liked the idea of all my hardware only being available from one place and from what i had seen, at a premium. Maybe that's changed now, but the last time i looked at Macs they all used their own particular hardware. Far be it from me to know all about it though...

I'd love to see Linux in a windows like form (with the same level of support), then i could dump Windows once and for all, but until Linux supports all the games and apps i want to use, it'll remain a pipe dream. Although i'm half thankful, i know next to nothing about Linux operation, being that i've spent all my time infront of Windows based computers.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, at least now when i think apple jedi i won't feel so weird about it.. (i half suspect you told me before, and i had forgotten - i'll blame my old'ish age if that's the case, hehe).

You didn't mention if you're using plugins, do you have any installed that interact with media? Perhaps one of those could be causing a problem (if you have any installed of course).

Ok ... I have searched the forums looking for something that would guide me, but to no avail. This topic, to my knowledge, has not been raised.

I have a new site I am building, so I have the latest and greatest WP release (2.8.6).

Functionally, the Media Library is working wonderfully. However, having more than 20 items (without adjusting the screen options), links to sub pages to view items 21+ are not made available unless I go to the "Unattached" option. When using the "Unattached" option, I do get the "Displaying 1-0 of 0 [«][1][2][3][»]" page links. The difference between the "All" and "Images (##)" options compared to the "Unattached" option is "&paged=1" switch is appended to ".../wp-admin/upload.php?detached=1" in the address bar.

Under the "All" and "Images (##)" options, I can manually append "&paged=1" (or "2", etc.) to the URL, and be able to see items 21+, so I know that part works, so this is more of a display issue with the code for the Media Library, which should be relatively easy to resolve, as long as I know where to look. This is where I am either searching for assistance, or, need advise on where to download a bug fix.

So far, to circumvent this issue, I have adjusted the screen options to show 999 items (maximum allowed), however this is only a temporary fix, as over time, searching through and ever growing list will become quite overwhelming, not to mention if down the line I end up with more than 999 items.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

What jenny said. :-)

To add to that though, <2003 versions used .xls as the file extension, 2007 tend to use .xlsx, so it might also be worth double checking that the file type /program associations are correct too. Not sure how different browsers handle Excel files, but you may find it varies slightly from browser to browser too.

Edit: bit distracted there for a few minutes... damn you Clayton for beating me to it!! And more eloquently too. Grrrr! ;-)

Office 2007 uses a .docx extension for word instead of .doc like Office 2003, and excel of course is .xlsx not .xls in most cases. The XML file extensions have changed with Office 2007. Here is the MS document explaining it. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179191.aspx

Some browsers ( okay, just Internet Explorer ) have some difficulty interpreting what to do with those files. I visited your site using Firefox, and both the first and second files, .xls and .xlsx downloaded normally when clicked. I re-tested with IE, and only the first one .xls (office 2003) worked correctly. Internet Explorer attempted to identify and download the .xlsx (office 2007) file as a .zip extension. So I think that might be the issue.

Some references that might help; download .xlsx as .zip internet explorer

Excel files aren't necessarily designed to open in a web browser.
from my mac, when i click on your link, it downloads the file and i can open it locally. to download from a PC (windows), a user would have to know to right-click>save as.
depending on your goal for sharing this doc, you might want to rethink think the file format (the pdf viewer is more common to web browsers), or just indicate to users the right-click>save technique to download.

otherwise for sharing docs online, there exist other apps (google docs, drop.io, etc) you could explore.

I'm trying to use my blog to share a few helpful spreadsheets I created with readers. I utilized Excel 2007 to add features and add some automatic features unavailable in prior versions of Excel.

Issue:
When I upload my Excel 2007 file to my blog, everything seems fine and I get a link. I then go to the page I created for my excel tools and add the name/description of the spreadsheet, highlight the text and add a link, pasting in the link I got from the Media Library upload.

When I go out and visit the site, all seems normal, but when I click on the link, instead of opening the file, it opens a directory which appears to contain a bunch of junk related to the Excel 2007 file. I cannot figure out how to make it so that the Excelt 2007 file simply opens (yes, I have Excel 2007 installed).

I saved the filed down to Excel 2003 format and it work fine - clicking on the download link open up the Excel spreadsheet, not a directory.

Examples can be found at: http://www.edwardhauder.com / Excelt Tools page

Anyone else run into this issue with Excel 2007 files? Any easy way to work around this? Am I just missing somethign really easy?

Thanks for the help,

Not sure if this helps, but I was having a similar issue and in lieu of finding a plugin that solved this problem, I simply used the Force User Login plugin and then created a .htaccess file in my 'uploads' directory to prevent direct hot-linking to any file within that directory and its subdirectories not coming directly from my 'Members Only' site. This way, only logged in users can access content within the uploads directory, and only when directly linked from my site. Otherwise direct linking re-directs the user to another site. Does this make sense?

Here's an example .htaccess file you'd want to create and place in your 'wp-content/uploads' directory:

IndexIgnore *
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?myprotectedmemberssite\.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !hotlink\.(gif|png|jpg|doc|xls|pdf|html|htm|xlsx|docx) [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(gif|png|jpg|doc|xls|pdf|html|htm|xlsx|docx)$ http://yahoo.com/ [NC]

In the above example the first line disables file directory listings (so no one can view the files in the 'uploads' or any of its subdirectories. The line with HTTP_REFERER makes sure linking to a particular file is coming from my site. The gif|png|jpg|doc|xls|pdf|html|htm|xlsx|docx) is a list of filetypes I want to prevent from being directly linked to (unless they are clicking from my site).

Thanks,

I wrote an article that may help some of those with wordpress uploading files to the wrong directory: Please check it out here!

Basically it says go to Settings > Miscellaneous > Upload media to directory... like Edmin's post says.

Hope this helps!

OK, even more confused - it seems to work now without FTPing the images beforehand - maybe it is just a caching issue?

(Or maybe setting wp-content to 777 sorted it - will we ever know?)

Same problem here - none of the above hacks worked for me. Using a fresh install of Wordpress 2.8.5.

Isn't this a MAJOR BUG in Wordpress?

I tried setting permissions on all directories to 777, but still no luck.

Hang on . . . I set permissions on wp-content to 777

Then, I uploaded my images via Dreamweaver to uploads/2009/11 . . .

Still no content when I went to the Library though.

But, then, I found I *could* upload an image via the flash uploader.

How bizarre is that???!!!

It's a hack, Jim, but not as we know it!

Cheers, Mark

I am having the exact same problem, also on GoDaddy. Also tried uploading via Core FTP, tried using a video plugin, and tried adding it as a custom field. Nothing works!

Anyone?

Hello!

I am needing to allow my authors(and everyone below) to upload media, but not delete it. As some of them are not very tech savy and like to click, thus i am worried i will wake up one day to a bulk delete!

I have the plugin Capability Manager but this only allows for uploads and does not have a button of deleting.

Any help is welcomed and appreciated!

WTF... stop telling people to set permissions to 777 !!!!

It means that anyone logged in to the server can replace your uploaded pictures of your lovely family with pictures of god knows what!

The last '7' of the three is the sum of the permissions read(4), write(2) and execute(1) for "others".

Make sure the uploads directory and its sub directories have group ownership set to the apache users primary group (usually 'apache').

Then chmod all directories to 770 (which means owner and group has read/write/execute rights on the directories).

It's a good idea to create all directories manually for a couple of years ahead! With all the month directories as well.

Thanks all you lovely people. Switching off organise my uploads, and manually creating wp-content/uploads and setting just this file to 777 has worked for me.

Images are now uploading.
