Hey Dude, I did this little fix of yours and it completely fucked up my entire dashboard access... I couldn't get back into the dashboard to even disable the math comments spam pluggin. I was totally screwed but luckily I found a solution after almost bursting into tears.

I would advise people against this alleged fix.

I discovered that the encryption method for the challenge mixes in the IP address of the server. That's fine most of the time, but if you are on some sort of load balanced server farm the box that provides the challenge may be different than the one that parses the submission, and people who are trying to post on your blog get an incorrect error message.

The fix is trivial -- just comment out line 160 of math-comment-spam-protection.classes.php. It doesn't do anything anyway.

This:

        $inputstring .= getenv('SERVER_ADDR');

becomes:

//      $inputstring .= getenv('SERVER_ADDR');

same problem here, I have 2.7 wordpress and this plugin will not work.
Every time I enter the correct number the plugin still gives me the same error that the number is in correct.

I know that you are talking about Rok and thank you for your reply.

I am aware of Trackback and Pingbacks but I assure you that the amount of spam I mentioned is actually comment spam !

I hope the plugin-developer is working on someway to make it more fortified.

In the meanwhile, I've installed "Simple CAPTCHA" by zorex which is providing some much needed relief !

Math Comment Spam is a nice plugin that stops infesting manual comment spam. If you're getting spam in form of "PBs & TBs", it cann't help, you've to install some other plugins to stop this form of spamming.

You can install Simple Trackback Validation plugin to stops TBs.

I installed this plugin and loved it the first couple of days.

Then suddenly, Defensio was infested with 150 comments in two hours in it's quarantine, all linking to: http://www.cba.edu.kw/gne/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10487

Definitely, some one has figured out how to hack this plugin.

Sorry man, you've to go back to the drawing board !

Plugin don't check when the user is registered, so you should use (f.e. comments.php)
if (( function_exists('math_comment_spam_protection') )AND( !isset($user_ID) )) {
instead of
if ( function_exists('math_comment_spam_protection') ) {

Related to "Add code to the comments.php of your theme. In the following an example for the Wordpress standard theme (Kubrick)" seeing on Plugin-Homepage of the Author

	<!-- ****************** Field Names ****************** -->
<fieldset class="options">
<legend>Field Names</legend>
<p style="margin-left: 25px; color: #555; font-size: .85em;">
<label for="mcsp_opt_fieldname_useranswer">Name of field for user's answer:</label>
<input name="mcsp_opt_fieldname_useranswer" type="text" id="mcsp_opt_fieldname_useranswer" value="<?php echo $optionarray_def['mcsp_opt_fieldname_useranswer']; ?>" size="30" />

			<label for="mcsp_opt_fieldname_mathresult">Name of hidden field that contains the hash:</label>
<input name="mcsp_opt_fieldname_mathresult" type="text" id="mcsp_opt_fieldname_mathresult" value="<?php echo $optionarray_def['mcsp_opt_fieldname_mathresult']; ?>" size="30" />
</p>
</fieldset>

And here's what in the Wordpress Options > Field Names:
User's Answer: mcspvalue
Hidden Field that Contains the Hash: mcspinfo

If you decided to change the field names through the WordPress options, be sure to change the field names in the code you added to comment.php (and, after correcting the field names in the code you added, be sure to refresh/clear browser cache).

I installed the plug in, activated it, went to their website and copied and pasted their code into the comments.php of my theme, (WordPress Default 1.6 by Michael Heilemann), exactly as they said to.

The field correctly appears when users want to leave a comment, but even when the correct number is typed in users are told "Error: You have entered the wrong sum in the spam protection field"
