Hi, In my plugin I have an admin side function which can be run by admin for taking backup. Same function is called by cron, which I have set up.

Cron is running as I have set an email on it.
I have also set multiple email in main function, but when I manuaaly take backup I got all mails but when function is run through cron I got no emails which are inside that function. So I am not able to debug where cron fails to run my backup function as it is working very fine manually.

Please help me.
Thank you.

I too wanted to be able to do this, but couldn't find anything. So I went to making my own plugin, despite having extremely limited PHP programming skills. Below is what I finally came up with that seems to work. Sorry for the length, I commented it heavily so you could see what I was doing. Like I said, I don't know much about programming, so I apologize for the likely numerous bad practices - it also has no admin screen functionality so you're stuck with editing the code itself to get what you want. When you're done, save it to a php file and stick it in your plugins folder. Upon activation, it should create any posts from the uri you put in, and setup an hourly scheduled event to look for future posts. That's all! I can't guarantee it will work for you, and probably can't help you if it doesn't lol. But hopefully it will at least start you out.

<?php
/*
* Plugin Name: XML to Wordpress Posts
* Description: Creates posts automatically from an XML feed.
* Author: Terry Hart
* Plugin URI: http://www.freemarconi.com
* Version: 1.0
* =======================================================================
*/

/* The following code is probably not very pretty or efficient, but it's working
* for me so far. I am not a PHP programmer! This took me forever to get going lol.
* A lot is taken from the RSS_Import class in the WordPress core, much of the rest
* from looking at other plugins and scouring the web for help.
* I can't guarantee anything! But hopefully someone can get something out of the
* days I spent getting this to work, especially since there doesn't seem to be
* any existing plugins that do quite what this does yet.
*/
require_once(ABSPATH . '/wp-admin/includes/post.php');
require_once(ABSPATH . '/wp-admin/includes/taxonomy.php');
require_once(ABSPATH . '/wp-admin/includes/import.php');

if (!class_exists("xmltowp")) {
	class xmltowp {

		var $posts = array ();
		var $sxml;

		function xmltowp() { //constructor
		}

		function xmltowp_init() {
			$this->import();
		}

		function get_posts() {
			global $wpdb;
			$xmluri = 'http://PUT YOUR FEED ADDRESS HERE';
	    	$sxml = simplexml_load_file($xmluri);
	    	$index = 0;

	    	/* This next part depends on the schema of your XML
	    	 * (Sorry if I didn't use those words correctly, I'm
	    	 * not entirely sure what it means) And the format of the feed
	    	 * For example, if you look at the XML from a Google
	    	 * Calendars feed, you'll see xmlns:gd='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005'
	    	 * at the top, and each entry is enclosed with <entry> tags.
	    	 * The next two lines would be:
	    	 * foreach ($sxml->entry as $entry) {
    		 *		$gd = $entry->children('http://schemas.google.com/g/2005');
    		 *
    		 * For my site, and the example below, I pulled an RSS feed,
    		 * so the next two lines differ to reflect the structure and schema of
    		 * that type of feed.
    		 */
			foreach ($sxml->channel->item as $item) {
				$dc = $item->children('http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/');

				/* Now you have to get all the information you want from the XML
				 * document. The format depends on the XML tags used.
				 * For plain tags - <TAG>, you would use the format
				 * $string = $item->TAG;
				 * (or $entry instead of $item depending on your schema/structure)
				 * Some data is enclosed by <dc:TAG> (or <gd:TAG>) tags,
				 * Those can be parsed by using
				 * $string = $dc->TAG;
				 * Finally, some data is in the tag itself, like
				 * <enclosure url="http://ccmixter.org/content/4nsic/4nsic_-_Super_Heroes_(_Sol_Remix).mp3" length="3958953" type="audio/mpeg"></enclosure>
				 * Parsing that requires something like
				 * $string = $item->TAG->attributes()->ATTRIBUTE;
				 *
				 * For WordPress posts, you'll eventually need the following strings:
				 * $post_author, $post_date, $post_date_gmt, $post_content, $post_title, $post_status, $guid, and $categories
				 * First, let's get everything we want out of the XML itself, then we'll play with it a bit.
				 * This is an example of what I wrote for my own site freemarconi.com. I uploaded vocal tracks
				 * of our music to ccMixter.org. The site has an API that lets you pull an XML document showing
				 * everyone who has remixed my tracks. I wanted to create a post for every remix made
				 * and make it look pretty. Hopefully you get an idea of how this is working to make your
				 * own plugin.
				 */
		    	$post_title = $item->title;	//I'm taking the title exactly as it comes. You may want to process your own titles a bit for aesthetic reasons
		    	$guid = $item->link; //Also taken straight. I don't know what $guid is for, but I want the link for the post content

I've worked out how to add a cron job.

If I want to allow the user to change from the default (using a drop down list so they can't do anything silly) is the best way to unschedule it and then reschedule it?

If I understand it properly to unschedule it I call wp_next_scheduled and pass in my hook. That returns the timestamp of the next run of my event and then I can then use that to call wp_unschedule_event

Is that it? The documentation in the Codex is very minimal.

Thanks.

I am developing a WordPress website and want the Post content to be populated by a live XML data feed. We have a local system which will supply a custom XML data feed of records. Each unique XML record will create a post with custom data. The XML feed will be updated regularly and so I imagine we will set up an hourly cron job to do an import of any new records or changes.

I am looking for advice from anyone who has set up something similar for WordPress. Where is the best place to start and are there any plugins worth utilizing or is this going to be a completely custom build job.

Just to report back to the forum that 5ubliminal’s Scheduled MIAs (Missing in Action) WordPress Plugin did absolutely nothing (at least with my combination of WP 2.8.4, Thesis 1.5.1 and about 18 or so plugins). I guess it’s a case of “your mileage may vary”.

Hi,
I am using this plugin : http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-tags/

What I use it to automatically tag all my posts, it is very usefull especially when i want to add new tags and apply them to all (matching) previous post on my blog...

Anyhow, I find myself clicking on the "auto tag all content" button very often, and was wondering if there was a way to make this action automated.

Once per X time the auto tag would go through all the post and add new tags if necessary.

Thanks,

I am running Wordpress 2.7 (we need an upgrade) on IIS 7, we host ourselves. We had the scheduling problem and I found a solution that worked.

http://www.kimwoodbridge.com/scheduled-posts-in-wordpress-dont-work-a-possible-solution-for-iis/

Now the bit to change was slightly different (must be the different WP versions), but it still worked.

Around line 180 of /wp-includes/cron.php is the following
$cron_url = get_option( 'siteurl' ) . '/wp-cron.php?check=' . wp_hash('187425');

we change to:

$cron_url = 'http://127.0.0.1/wp-cron.php?check=' . wp_hash('187425');

and scheduled posts now work.

I hope this helps someone else

I have solved to the problem of missed scheduled:

- First I recognized that wordpress 2,8 is much more slow, is a fact.
- Then I stopped looking for an error of programming. I started to find an excessive delay.
- Then, reading, I discovered that schedule post was not a problem of WordPress 2,8 it is a symptom of a slow system.
- Finally I found it the solution here: http://lists.automattic.com/pipermail/wp-trac/2009-January/038071.html and consists of modifying the timeout in wp-includes/cron.php.
Approximately in the line number 205 I changed
wp_remote_post ($cron_url, Array (' timeout' => 0.01, ' blocking' => false));

wp_remote_post ($cron_url, Array (' timeout' => 20, ' blocking' => false));

Lamentably I have not get to scheduled post work nex to Hyper Cache (they only works together in WP 2,6) reason why you must to disconnect that plugin to see working scheduled post.

This is absolutely shocking! From what I understand, this got “broken” with WP 2.7. We’re now on WP 2.8.4(!) and this documented bug remains unresolved.

I’m planning to install the plugin below from 5ubliminal to see if that resolves it.

“Missed Schedule” Future Posts - Scheduled M.I.A.s Wordpress Plugin 5ubliminal’s 5pace

Apart from that, backrevving or editing your cron stuff (which I’m not comfortable doing) appears to be the only way out until Automattic gets their act together and starts listening to users.

That is really strange. Do you normally have to have execute permissions on php files on your server? Are you using wget? That should make a normal request through your webserver (and should work from any server actually). It sounds to me like you are running the script from the command line version of php.

Hi,

I am trying to get wordpress to call a function called "wpr_cronjob" every hour in my plugin. So I registered a activation hook and in the book I call the following function:

wp_schedule_event(time(), 'hourly', 'wpr_cronjob');

The function is not getting called because every time the function is called, I will receive an email (which I am not). I have set up a cronjob on my linux server to run wp-cron.php every 5 minutes and the function is still not getting called. Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong?

I have WP installed in a sub folder of my site. I also have a cron job scheduled to run every day which checks for file changes throughout the entire site. For some reason, it registers that all my WP files are changing every day - something like 346 of them! Is this normal? Why would the WP files be changing? I haven't edited any of them or set any for delayed publication. Any clues or answers are much appreciated!

Paul,

Try using the following cronjob. This will write debugging output to a file in /tmp

*/2 * * * * /usr/bin/wget -O - http://robfelty.com/test28/wp-content/plugins/postie/get_mail.php -a /tmp/postie_error  >> /tmp/postie_log

I am planning on making debugging easier.
