You could try adding an object cache to make it faster but there's very little to do in the plugin itself as it's quite simple.

Perhaps another plugin is loading and slowing down the request as it's not cached by wp-super-cache or other full-page caching plugins.

Hi, here's a weird one.

When I enable "Cookies for Comments" I notice a weird page "flash" when pages load in Safari. It's almost like a camera shutter flash or a blinking eye. Eventually, the page loads. But, the effect is quite disconcerting.

The CSS file that Cookies for Comments loads looks like this:

I get the problem whether I am logged into WP or now.

However, if I am logged in with WP Super Cache enabled, the CSS file that Cookies for Comments loads looks like this:

/* Page generated by Cookies for Comments at http://ocaoimh.ie/cookies-for-comments/ */
<!-- WP Super Cache did not cache this page because you are logged in and "Don't cache pages for logged in users" is enabled. -->

I'll bet those comments are not valid. However, like I said, I see this problem in Safari whether or not I am logged in.

Any ideas? Thanks.
I wonder if this is causing it?

Samboll,
Thanks sooo much. Cookies for comments is a great plugin.
I was getting a spam comment each single minute. Now CFC prevented them all from even commenting in the first place! and even if gone escaped, CFC automatically catch it and delete it. Great plugin. Thanks sooooooo much Samboll.

Hello
I'm getting weird spam comments.
A few days ago I removed the email and website field from the comment form. But today I got 180 comments, each with about 20 links. The weird thing is that those comments listed in spam section, with each showing an email address and a website, and they all come from one IP address": 94.102.49.76

How can people type their email addresses and websites when the fields are not there? Is that some kind of spam script that submits those comments without using the comment form at all?

And if so, how can I prevent such scripts from storming my blog with spam comments?

Thanks. I understand the difference between the two. The page you sent says:

"Since this feature is exclusive to MU, regular WordPress plugins placed in this folder may or may not work."

So, I am asking, does Cookies for Comments work when placed in mu-plugins?

In my own testing since my original post, I've found it does not work. This would mean that it has to be activated for all blogs.

I loaded your stylesheet above and unfortunately it didn't set a cookie on my machine. You should edit the plugin and find the setcookie() command. Add a mail() or error_log() before that command just to verify that it's being called. You should also check your error log to see if anything's there.

Hi Donncha -

I used this plugin successfully for a while, and it really helped me wheedle out the wheat from the chaff.

However, a few months ago, it appears to have stopped working. I've browsed the other discussions on the topic, and here's where I'm at:

1) The 32-digit stylesheet is appearing in the source code. When I load the stylesheet manually into the browser, it shows blank.

2) However, when I check my cookies, I am not seeing a corresponding 32-digit cookie having been set.

In the source code I see this:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://www.zombiephiles.com/3ad9ac3bc26159d7498579acd530eee1.css?t=1719086234" type="text/css" media="screen" />

However, the only cookies I see are comment_author_email and comment_author (which shows as [Blocked by CFC] after I've tried to test comments).

I've tried deactivating the plugin and deleting it, then re-uploading the plugin and reactivating; however, this doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

I'd love to get CFC working again, since I get 100+ comments slipping past Akismet monthly that CFC stops; however, it's also stopping ALL other comments (except trackbacks) since the cookie isn't being set.

On the off-chance that there's a conflict with another plugin that I'm running, I'm including the current plugin list. Not all plugins are currently up-to-date.

Add to Any: Share/Bookmark/Email Button - .9.9.3
Akismet - 2.2.6
All in One SEO Pack - 1.5.7
Cookies for Comments - 0.5.1
Executable PHP widget - 1.2
Google Analytics - 2.5
Google XML Sitemaps - 3.1.4
Kimili Flash Embed - 2.0.1
Popularity Contest - 2.0b2
SEO Title Tag - 2.3.3
Twitter Tools - 1.6
User Photo - 0.9.4
Viper's Video Quicktags - 6.1.20
WP-Polls - 2.40
WP-Polls Widget - 2.40
WP Cache Inspect - 0.8.2
WPG2 - 3.0.7
WP Super Cache - 0.9.4.3

Offhand, I don't know which of those would be causing problems with CFC, except possibly WP Super Cache, but that's a commonly used plugin so I'm sure we would already have heard of incompatibilities with yours.

Any thoughts on how I can find some more information about the problem? Are there DB tables that I can drop to "reset" the plugin, or is that accomplished by deactivating it? I'm not entirely a novice, but I'm not entirely an expert either; however, I'm good with instructions.

Eagerly looking forward to hearing back from you about this issue. Thanks, as always!

I just started using this plugin and i've already had a few odd results. A the same time i changed WordPress's discussion options to allow comments by default instead of moderating, because i figured this plugin should take care of that.

But i've had a few comments tagged as Blocked by CFC land as approved comments on posts. What's more, at least two of them have been link dump comments that should have been blocked by WP's built-in More than X links rule. I'm not sure who's to blame there.

Is it possible (or does it make sense) to get around this problem by adding the ability to type in the cookie code (
*put_cookie_value_here.*
) from within the CFC configuration page (or better yet add it to the code itself, so it picks it up as the default like one can do for the Akismet plugin)?

A good plugin - but since it basically had the same performance on my blog as Akismet did, I decided to de-install, since the [Blocked by CFC] label didn't disappear after whitelisting a comment.
But it still appears on commenters, initially "caught" by CFC - even after de-activation. How can I rectify that?

First thing you must do is upgrade to 2.6.5 as you're just asking to be hacked!
Does your blog use fancy permalinks? ie. mod_rewrite?

Thanks for the tips (some are a bit over my head).

Nevertheless, it seems the problem is that the stylesheet call is added to the page source, but the css file is not created (can't see it on my FTP and I get a 404 when I try to load it...).

Testing on a WP 2.5.1 blog. Other active plugins are Akismet, Feedburner, SRG clean archives...

My ISP is blocking outbound calls on port 80, which nukes Akismet, which is why I'm looking for another solution. Could that be interfering with your plugin?

Do you have any other plugins that might conflict with the stylesheet setting the cookie?
What do you see when you load the stylesheet in it's own window? You should see a blank page.
When you load the stylesheet, does it set a cookie.
Are there an errors in the error log?

Add error_log() calls to the plugin so you know the plugin is being called. See the Php manual for how to use that command. (Google will find it)

This happens on Safari 3 (Mac) and FireFox 2 (PC), on 2 separate machines and 5 different WP blogs...

On the Mac, I can see the link to the stylesheet in my source when I activate CFC.

I don't see a corresponding cookie in my cookies though...

Does the browser you're testing with have a cookie from your site with a long 32 character name? Does the source code of your site have a stylesheet with that same 32 character name as the filename?

Hello and thanks for the plug-in.

I've been testing it along (but not simultaneously) with wp-spamfree and would much rather use yours (simpler is better).

But in all my testing, legitimate comments end up in the akismet spam queue.

Is this normal behavior or am I missing something. Tried with different versions of WP on 2 computers and an iPhone...

Thanks for your help,

Vincent.
