Well I didn't try them all just now since since the first one, Acronyms, worked just the way you described.

Using WordPress Default themes, no other plugins activated.

Yes, a Glossary plugin providing one (or more) centralised definition pages, which adds explainations to particulary words on all posts and pages in form of a tooltip or similar.

Not that I have an answer, but could you describe exactly what you would want the plugin to do...

From my notes I have these that may spark an interest...

Text replacement, inclusion, include post in pages:

I am desperately in need of a glossary plugin. A plugin where you define definitions yourself.
I tried this:
http://www.internetmarketingmonitor.org/word-press-plugins/imm-glossary-wordpress-plugin/
but got an awful lot of mysql errors and deleted the plugin in fear.
Anyone tried this one on 2.8.4? The plugin looks great, but it is old.

Perhaps there is a reason why it's not in the WP Plugin resipiory.

Personally, using the Acronym plugin myself, I don't think there needs to be a distinction made. The only difference is in the code, < abbr > and < acronym > act exactly the same way when you look at it on the page that is displayed, so there's no use to do so.

However, I would REALLY like to see a piece that will allow for import/export for a list of acronyms in the plugin. I've got a HUGE file that has all the acronyms I have come across that I'd love to just import into the database, instead of entering them manually for each and every one.

Also I don't know how this is addressed, but how are multiple meanings of the same acronym handled?

I've been thinking about this for a while but I'm not convinced that the average user will understand the distinction between <abbr> and <acronym>, or will care enough about semantic HTML to use it.

However I'm still thinking about it.

Hey guys,

Ummm.

I decided that I'll devote some of my spare time to at least try to maintain the Acronyms plugin. I'll be doing most of my development and testing on a fresh install of the latest WordPress since I no longer have an active working WP blog install, so please let me know if anything I release breaks another plugin or conflicts with something else.

Anyway 1.6.2 has been released with Spadija's regex correction.

Some time has passed since an official update has been made to the acronyms list in this plugin. As things go, things are forgotten and as time passes, new acronyms emerge, so I've got some additions.

The most important ones:

CPU - Central Processing Unit

FF2 - FireFox 2

FF3 - FireFox 3

FLV - Flash Video

GPS - Global Positioning System

HD - High-Definition

HTTPS - HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure

IE7 - Internet Explorer 7

IE8 - Internet Explorer 8

PC - Personal Computer

SEO - Search Engine Optimization

SWF - Small Web Format

TB - Terabyte

The lesser important ones:

AAC - Advanced Audio Coding

AIFF - Audio Interchange File Format

ATX - Advanced Technology Extended

FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec

HDMI - High-Definition Multimedia Interface

LCD - Liquid Crystal Display

LED - Light Emitting Diode

PATA - Parallel ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment)

RIA - Rich Internet Application

WAV - Waveform audio format

And some that I left out since they may only add more confusion to readers or may be too close to real words:

MP3 - MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3

MP4 - MPEG-4 Part 14

Without modifying the source code, it'd be cool if we could specify between <abbr> and <acronym>

Spadija,

You're a magician!! I say that because anyone that can understand and write regex statements such as the one above certainly deserves more than medal.

All jokes aside... I do use the Acronym plugin on a couple of my sites and although I have not noticed any issues I am keen to incorporate your fix "just in case".

Before I do so... I am curious whether the plugin author has any plans to include this fix in a future/upcoming version? As I would prefer to "upgrade" than to fiddle with the "code".

Thanks again and hopefully we will hear some further feedback,

The Acronyms plugin is smart enough not to replace acronyms inside of HTML tags, but when I noticed that the plugin broke [caption] code in my posts, I discovered that it will replace acronyms inside of BBCode tags, thus breaking them. All that is needed to fix this is a slight modification of the regular expression it uses.

If you replace the fourth line of the acronyms_replace function (line 377) with the following code, everything should work fine.

$text = preg_replace( "|(?!<[^<>]*?)(?!\[[^\[\]]*?)(?<![?.&])\b$acronym\b(?!:)(?![^\[\]]*?\])(?![^<>]*?>)|msU", "<acronym title=\"$fulltext\">$acronym</acronym>" , $text );

Hope that helps anyone who's been having trouble with this plugin!

Yeah, for some reason I am sometimes getting a hidden control character before the <?php and I don't know what's causing it. 1.6.1 seems to have fixed the issue and I'm never going to edit my files on Windows again.

I auto upgraded to the 1.6, and it's still messing with my admin activities. For example, I just deactivated the plugin, and instead of bringing me back to the plugin page, it gave me a page with in the upper lefthand corner. I was also unable to preview draft posts while the plugin was activated. Any kind of confirm or submit action would bring me to either a blank page or a page with in the upper lefthand corner. Deactivating the plugin corrects those problems.

I'm running WordPress v. 2.7

BTW -- if I'm putting this in the wrong place or should be starting a new topic for my issue since it's slightly different from the one that initiated this topic, please let me know and I'll gladly do so.

Sadly, 1.6Beta1 is almost identical to 1.6DEV. The only difference is that I saved the file on my Mac instead of on my Windows machine.

K,

Apologies for the duplicate post (delete the other one if you can)

Just tested a couple of things and answered some of my own questions

1) If a term/acronym is already linked then acronyms adds on top of what is already there... cool!

2) Acronyms can have spaces in them (eg: Tok Pisin).

3) The plugin is case sensitive. If there's an entry in acronyms table "Tok Pisin" then "tok pisin" will not be recognised by the plugin. Anyway of making your plugin case insensitive - or perhaps making that an option?

R

NB: From the little testing I have done so far... I like what I see!
