Turns out this was a problem with my hoster that coincidentally happened as I was working on the files...it's fine now, my minor heart attack was for naught! The rewrite fix didn't work for me however, I 'm stuck with the default permalinks for this site.

I've just had a disaster with the rewrite.php file - I read through this thread carefully, downloaded the rewrite.php file and copied it to my server. The site stopped working; nothing will load. I deleted it from the server and restored the original version, but the problem is the same - the browser attempts to load the page for about 10 mins and then either a database connection error comes up, or it says 'The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process.'. I haven't changed anything else on the server. Anyone have any ideas what might be going wrong? I've tried copying the rewrite.php file in binary and ascii modes...

I'm pretty new to wordpress and still very much in learning mode. I know this is an old post but just in case somebody else with the same problem stumbles across this thread, I thought I would post this as a possible solution. Insert the following into the header:

This of course presumes that you have loaded your image into the images folder within your theme. It worked for me and may help somebody else with the same problem.

I am new to wordPress.
I have been searching through the forum for 2 days for a solution of permalink.
I am now using version 2.5.1.
My problem is by using the default permalink everything works fine but when I change it to /index.php/%postname%/,it didn't work and cause a CGI ERROR.
After a few time of CGI ERROR, it will cause server unavailable.
I can't find htaccess file in the wordPress folder. I try to create htaccess file on my own but I don't really know what the content should put in the file.
I have also update rewrite.php but it doesn't work.
Please help.Thanks

None of the offered solutions worked for me. Funny enough,,, I installed a brand new blog,,, went pretty good altogether,, then I went and had a smoke and a coffee,,, and when I came back,, I refreshed the page and OOOOPSSS,,, all gone,,, POOOFFF! Unless a squirrel sneaked up and changed something, I must have a computer ghost!

WordPress,, shame on you to claim the release to be stable. The more I am studying this thing,,, the more I am disappointed with a bad job.

Two weeks ago I did a first import of my blogger blog to my new wordpress 2.5 blog.

The import was succefuly imported but now I'm trying to import again just to import the latest comments and changes on the blogger site before I publish the migration to the new domain name.

However, It seems that doesn't match. The Import button is freeze and nothing happens without start importing. I've tried to clear configuration and restart but again nothing happens and the Import button changes to "Importing" without doing anything.

Anyone could help me to recover and update importing again from blogger???

Hi I ran into this problem too and I'm on Brinkster Windows hosting. The permalink I'm using is:
/index.php/archive/%postname%/

After upgrading from v2.2 to v2.5, none of the links to either posts, pages, categories or calendars work. However, when I change permalinks back to the default setting, everything goes back to normal. Now I'm pretty sure it's got nothing to do with my hosting provider as custom permalinks were working on the older version.

Anyone have any idea on what else I can try? I tried using the modified rewrite.php by dlo but had no joy with it. :(

@astrologer:
I'm afraid your problem is not solved by the fix described in this post. If you don't have a permalink structure beginning by /index.php/... (aka PATHINFO permalink), the fix will have no effect on your blog's behaviour.

Hi, sorry to go on about this, but I'm jealous as so many people seem to have regained their bloglife with dlo's fix...

I haven't found the right place to drop the file into, I guess - where should it go (on the server, I take it)?

"Enter "includes" and remove the existing rewrite.php file. Then put the correct rewrite.php file into the same place (includes)."

dlo your solution worked for me, I downloaded your rewrite.php, uploaded it to my server, went into permalinks and set to default +saved, added my custom path name (/index.php/%postname%)+saved, worked like a charm... my pages are back. Thank you.

Just to clear up some confusion in this thread, people use the /index.php/ in the permalink structure when they aren't allowed to access the .htaccess file with their host (like with Yahoo!). adding index.php to your uri isn't ideal but it beats ?23423234.

Craig3:
I haven't encountered any problem so far but I'll check the support forum to see what they complain about and if something doesn't work on my site as they tell, I'll inform my site's hosting managers. Thank you.

Doccorner:
So I think you can't use it.

If your pages still don't work, DLO's advice is OK. Apply it carefully.

After you change the rewrite.php file with the correct one:
choose the default permalink and save it.
Then apply this one:
/index.php/%postname%/
and save it.
your pages will work without any problem.

The latest version of isapi_rewrite is seriously unstable. There is a flood of complaints in helicon's support forum, and the developers seem to be unable to fix it as the rewriter crashes/stops as of version 3.1.38 until the latest 3.1.45.

I tried that and it did not work for me either. Could it be that I have 3 blogs attached to the same google account? I only want to import 1.

You ROCK, DLO. Thank you. That was one of the easiest "fixes" I've ever had to do. And I'm no programmer.

THANKS!!

@ to Doccorner:

1- about the .htaccess file I have told above:
a) First of all, ask your hosting managers if their servers support isapi_rewrite component. If the answer "no", you can't use it. ıf they say "yes", that's OK.
b) after you upload it into your site, check its name. if it is htaccess you must change the name like this: .htaccess
If you can use this .htaccess file in your site, everything is OK. You don't need to get Linux.

2- about your pages problem:
Follow those steps carefully:
1- Using FTP, enter "includes" and remove the existing rewrite.php file. Then put the correct rewrite.php file into the same place (includes). To download the correct file click here: rewrite.php
2- On Your WordPress Blog: Turn your permalinks to the default, save this option, then turn on your custom permalinks and save it again.
