I just spent the last few hours wrestling with this, and then tried one last thing. Instead of trying to log in at domainname.com/wp-admin, I tried www.domainname.com/wp-admin.

Voila! My password worked and Remember Me seems to work as well. I just wish I'd thought of it about three hours ago.

FYI for Safari users, you should go into autofill and DELETE any old settings you have for that server. Then try and re-add it.

Here are a few suggestions that may help:

wp-config.php needs updating with both 2.6 and 2.7 because new cookie keys have been added. Note: Back up your wp-config.php first. Transfer your info (not the whole code) from your old wp-config.php file into the new one and generate and add the keys. See:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php

Delete cookies, empty browser cache, and quit and restart the browser. Sometimes this can clear odd login issues.

Try a different browser or check if a browser update is available.

If you are using Safari, open the preferences and make sure that Autofill user names and passwords is selected.

Temporarily disable all plugins and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then a plugin is at fault.

Hey Mary, last post, promise...

Your file manager on your server, have you refreshed the view? Is it showing you the latest view?

If it's not in there, you may be ftp'ing all those files some place else! Your ftp program is not complaining? It's happily putting those files where if not where you think it is?

As far as the error you have, it appears to be all about this one file.
Sometimes, because of 'group' issues, you have to delete files from your hosting account's file manager, and ftp the new files. Sometimes, the host server won't let the ftp overwrite files and it will fail silently! That's why it's often best to manually delete the destination files before pushing new ones, especially since (unless you look beforehand) you never know when the developers stop using an old file and delete it from the zip -but it's still on your host...

Worse comes to worse, risk group issues and upload that damn file manually in your server filemanager...

G'Night!

Anyway, I have to get off of this PC.

Seeing as this is a new install, every time you attempt to install and have to start over, there is usually cleanup involved. Hopefully your install was aborted before any of that. It probably was.

Things to search for if I'm wrong: deleting wp-config.php, deleting .htaccess on install, dropping tables etc.

Although really, if you deleted all the files on the server, then ftp'd the new ones over, and dumped your old wp-config.php file where it's supposed to be you should be good to go -if you didn't delete all the tables in the database...and if you did, you'd either have a head start in the install or a little cleanup to do...

I have to go.

Cheers!

No, don't change any code!

Make sure that the file that you're ftp'ing over is that missing compat.php file.

It needs to be put into the right folder.
It needs to be in: /public_html/wp-includes/

so you'll end up with: /public_html/wp-includes/compat.php

does that file exist on your server: /public_html/wp-includes/compat.php?

Not as far as I can tell. I looked for it on line 203 in wp-settings and it doesn't show that specific wording.

When I uploaded just the two files needed for the upgrade my site became inaccessible. I had to copy the original files back to get it working again. Is there anything I missed or has anyone else had this problem ?

Strange. I came on here to post about the exact same error.

It doesn't even say incorrect password, just reloads the login screen.
