Writing/Editing Posts: option to choose what editor style is default.

What's cool with WP2.1 is the ability to switch between Visual and Code interfaces for the editor window on the fly. However, it currently will default to the visual editor. IDEA: Create an option to choose which interface to be the default so if people want they could make the "code" editor the first window to load up.

Um, isn't this already on the Options > Writing admin page?

"Formatting: Users should use the visual rich editor by default"

Yes and no. Choosing that in 2.1 will enable both the visual edit and the code tabs. Unchecking that option will ONLY make the code pane available. My suggestion is to allow you to make both the code pane and visual edit tab available but give the option to have the code tab load by default.

nerrad: good idea. If I uncheck the 'Use the visual rich editor' checkbox, I still want to be able to switch to it if I'm feeling lazy or writing a straight forward post which doesn't require HTML editing.

  5. I think it would be more convenient to have the "use visual editor" selection area be available on the write page rather than on the profile page. It should be a nice, ajaxy button or something.

Another issue that relates to this is how a post content is processed when opened for editing in the visual editor (I haven't confirmed when the processing takes place but assume it relates to opening in the visual editor). Currently if you have the visual editor enabled any HTML entities that are used are automatically converted to the character they represent.

As an example if I were to enter code view and type ) that would get me a closing parenthesis. It should look like a closing parenthesis when viewing the post and when editing in the visual editor, but if you switch back to code view it should still be )

Currently that isn't the case. Enter that in code view, switch to visual editor and then back to code view and you've got yourself a proper closing parenthesis character instead of the HTML Entity. That sucks.

Well, would you look at that, the comment form has converted all the HTML entities. Some of those ) should look like this )

EDIT: Ok, I give up trying to put entities in these comments.

from what i've read, there is no longer a global setting for using the rich editor, correct? i know it doesn't show up in my 2.1.2 or 2.2 installs.

it would be nice to have one, i think, and then let users override it at the user preference level. it was this way prior to 2.0?

I agree. It would be fabulous to be able to ... (1) have the user decide which editing mode to use by default (if the admin allows more than one mode) ... and also (2) to be able to set this preference PER post/page as well. For instance, some entries I make I know I will always want to use the code edit mode whereas with others I know I will always want to use the visual mode. If I could just tick a box when initially creating that post which says "open me in code (or visual) mode from now on" ... {delusionally happy sigh in contemplation} ... :)
