    I think the idea of Galleries that use the main media library should be achievable using custom taxonomies.

    The reason that there is not definitive easy solution yet is the at the moment registering a taxonomy for an 'attachment' post type does not automatically create the necessary menu items as it would do when you register a taxonomy for posts or pages.

    If that functionality were to be added then it would be very easy to create a 'gallery' taxonomy for attachments, and easily assign an attachment to multiple galleries.

    I started working on a plugin which starts to create this functionality.
    https://github.com/benhuson/attachment-taxonomy-support

    It sort of gives an idea how it could work but it doesn't yet add a Gallery menu item under media.

    Ideally attachment taxonomy UI support is what needs adding to core, then if Galleries themselves don't get added to core I'm sure you'll see a range of plugins popup that implement this functionality.

    Ben,
    That is beautiful! I do hope that the powers that be see this and consider media taxonomies in the core. I hesitate to use your fantastic implementation only because of possible future issues maintaining the code...

    My implementation uses the built in WordPress register_taxonomy() function to create a tag and a category taxonomy for attachments.

    register_taxonomy( 'attachment_tag', 'attachment' );
    register_taxonomy( 'attachment_category', 'attachment' );

    If they were to implement attachment taxonomies in core, as this uses only the WordPress built-in functionality already, the only difference I could see might be that they use different naming conventions for the taxonomies, and change how the UI looks and works, so in theory the link between the taxonomy and attachment would still work.

    If that turns out to be a case, it would be easy to write a function to convert the name to the naming convention that is decided.

    I wanted to build it using only core WordPress functionality to minimise the disruption if this something like this does get added to core in future.

    Ben, good work. It addresses only part of the problem but it's really useful. I'll definitely give it a try in my next project.

    Sorry for those of you who noticed I posted this in several posts - there seemed to be a few topics on similar themes and I wasn't sure wether it was best to post in each topic, or not.

    Those other topics have now been pointed to this one - thanks @Ipstenu

    Totally agree, gallery needs more work, as a regular user, I just want some basic but WORKING funtionality regarding the gallery. If I want/need advanced gallery funtionality then I would take the plugin.

    Also not all themes work for some gallery plugins, so there is another reason to improve the wordpress gallery.

    thanks for reading :D

    I'm working on a plugin that let's us link to URL files and it almost works except for people that have any Colorbox or Lightbox plugins like me. You can see it at the bottom of this page http://a4jp.com/gallery777

    I'll post the plugin when it is working. Just a few bugs to kill and problems to iron out.

    I'm just shocked this wasn't fixed before. The WordPress instructions say we can type in a URL...

    More gallery control and multiple galleries are a no brainer. Very surprised it's not part of the core now.

  10. Can someone explain to me how the
    custom media folders topic has anything to do with this one.

    I can't see any good reason for consolidating a discussion that was debating the pros and cons of tags vs folders (vs ???) in order to organize/structure medias through the media library with some other discussion (this one) that is an entire different subject though it also points out the weaknesses of media handling within WordPress...
