    Indeed! Not saying, that it should be all lightbox-integrated, an other fancy stuff, but just a plain nice gallery that just works, and is easy to customize! :)

    Why not just use:
    remove_filter('gallery_style','',10)
    to remove the default CSS output?

    I can't wait until WordPress let's us link the default gallery image to URLs. At the moment we can't do that. The bug has been reported and it will just take a long time to fix but I hope it gets done one day.

    Imagine being able to use the gallery as a navigation screen. It would be really cool. Kind of like a cell phone ;)

    Really you fixed the huge bug in WordPress by doing that????? Amazing. I'm gonna try. The WordPress team said they will have to leave that till the version after 3.3 because it needed a fix then had to be tested and was difficult. You're a genius!!!!

    I'll post a message if this really works.

    Can you tell me which file you removed this from? Was it just the one line of code being deleted that fixed everything?

    We really need gallery improvements now WordPress is used a lot for CMS.
    The new uploader is awesome, but the way galleries are managed still misses good UI and UX. I think everybody should consider to enhance the core gallery features instead of rely on plugins...

    This is really good idea. As for now, WP 3.3 still has mentioned problems. Few days ago I was building a custom theme for my client (advertising agency) and faced that problems again while trying to convert the default gallery outputted with [gallery] shortcode to a jquery carousel gallery of thumbs with lightbox effect. After screaming lots of *bad* words and several cups of coffee I did the next:
    1. removed default shortcode:
    remove_shortcode('gallery', 'gallery_shortcode');
    2. added my own shortcode with the same name to work with my custom function:
    add_shortcode('gallery', 'p2_gallery_shortcode');
    3. Copied original 'gallery_shortcode' function (all the code) to my functions.php and altered it to fit my needs.

    Now it produces the exact code I need and I can easily transfer these changes to any of my themes. But what about other people who aren't this deep in altering php code?

    Anyway, inline styles in year 2012 are bad bad bad practice.

    And one more idea...

    It would be nice to have the ability to use more than 1 gallery per post/page. I know you can actually do this using a combination of 'include' and 'exclude' arguments, but it's not so easy and takes a lot of time.

    What I would suggest is to separate galleries and posts/pages. Maybe, even make it like a built-in custom post type so we will have these types by default - post, page, link, gallery. This way you can create whatever number of galleries in 'Media' section and include any of them (or several) in a post/page with shortcode and gallery ID. And you can create new galleries not only in 'Media' section but from the post/page editor as well, by clicking 'Add media' button. In this pop-up you can have an option to create a gallery and then upload media as it is done now.
