WordPress Media Gallery - Please, that can't be true ...

    Well, even if Jane Wells has closed a topic about the default media gallery in wordpress with the words "if you need a working one, go take a plugin", well, than there should be no function like this in wordpress. Or even a small function which works the minimum!

    Please don't get me wrong: But it makes me a little bit upsad to find out things like this in a modern web application like wordpress considers to be. Sorry but, who was the rogue, who put hard coded css style into the media.php? huh? I can't believe that this has been done in one of the most modern web applications around? I deeply hope that this littel shameful boob is fixed in WordPress 3 or maybe 2.9.2.x.

    No big deal? Well, the problem is, that I may can change it easely by taking it off the media.php, but when I update WP version, I probably forgot that I have hacked the core 2 months ago. That means, a visitor comes to read an old article and finds a broken gallery view inside of it. This is simply ... under the lowest level of "CODE POETRY".

    Please - also because of the fact, that the most gallery-plugins require you to change all article images to be set up by exactly that plugin to function properly (f.e. with JS image scripts), - there needs to be a "working" little media gallery in WP, able to style. "Working" means some basics, done in a few minutes of code: only some more standart short tag defaults, and just simply seperated php from the css, which should be inside the wp-content to be able for themers to overwrite, and ... I can't believe, that I have to say that: can you please change the selection form value in the insert gallery panel to minium of ONE please ?!? Why 4 columns minimum ??? I do really don't understand that simple decisions, which only need seconds to be made ...

    Sorry, but this is not the "Ma.tt"-style I'm used to ...

    img borders and margins as hard coded by default, why?? there is no chance to change that with overwrites, because the css will render directly before the gallery code appears. the width percentage is the only css part what may need to be set to handle the count of columns correctly by default. but the rest makes absolutely no sense inside of the php core file ...

    Thank you Jane for your reply. Please don't get me wrong. I repect all of the work here, including yours. I didn't want to attack anybody personally, it was just about the principle of sharing ideas and suggestions, what people are invited to over here and what cannot work this way around. A not working media gallery, discussed in a suggestions area, shouldn't be answered with a link to an extending plugin and a closed topic. Otherwise everything can be fixed with extensions. The media gallery is part of the core. And as long as it is, it should be fixed if it is broken.

    I would like to ask you guys to change this part like this:

    And additional shortcodes in the media.php should be "jsopen" with the options FALSE/lightbox/thickbox etc.., and "includes" should be extended with the option FROm/TO insteed of any single ID manually only. My suggestion would implement to set up the first ID anyway. Or start ID and count of pictures would make it too, what sometimes is useful in sidebar galleries, to show a good looking group of pictures like 9 pictures in 3 columns without any long tweaks with picture IDs. Also a shortcode like "label" for notext/description/title option would be good to prevent the gallery shortcode from posting text by default in between a picture wall which needs to be overwritten with css again, if not wanted, or if there is the need of showing the info instead of the title.

    All suggestions I ask for do only need small and fast changes of code. To make it easier for all, not only for a few individuals. Because I know, that it doesn't make any sense to rework an extension deeper, while there are many individual plugins available for. I only talk about a working media handling in general.

    Please beware: all you implement, you control. What joomla has killed, was the mass of half working plugins with a core, ignoring the tons of asks to implement somemore basic features. a small and easely functioning media management including the standart gallery options should be implemented, and should work properly in this century.

    BTW: there is a bug in your bbpress forum here, that puts xhtml line breaks on every single line in the code markup section, if you want to edit a post including markup parts. (Firefox 3 over here)

    I hope that the gallery function can be extended as rwoood has mentioned. There are times when I just want a gallery of previously uploaded photos or a gallery of photos from a given month, but there is no way to do this easily. Even plug-ins aren't a real solution because they require me to use their own directory structure and media library. Since WP already has a media library why can't a plug-in or WP feature use that library and generate customizable galleries?

    Wait a moment - are You all saying, that there is no simple plugin for gallery, that uses default Media library? I don't want to use 3rd party plugins, because of problems with such things as displaying image on home page (many themes need reconfiguration).

    Maybe someone knows, how to make gallery by post tags from default "Media Library"? This is simple idea and it's strange, that such thing does't exist :o
