Volunteer for Roles, Sign up, Email Reminders
This could be for a community website, church, school, volunteer organization. It would display a calendar of events embedded in a particular page that only users could see and access. It would allow users to sign up as a volunteer for that event and then email those that signed up a reminder when the date was approaching.
There's nothing else like this on WordPress (believe me I've looked), but it would be extremely useful.
This is plugin territory. There a numerous event calendar plugins, as well as role management plugins. You could even use BuddyPress with the BuddyPress event calendar plugin.
BuddyPress seems like overkill if all you want is a simple calendar with reminders, no? I'm in need of exactly the same thing, for volunteers to both book their own shift and then get email reminders of their shifts. I need there to be different categories of shifts too. If you ever find one that works, I'd be happy to hear of it.
Did you ever come up with a solution for this? I'm looking for the same thing.
Did anyone find a solution for this great idea? I would really be interested in something super simple like mentioned in the original post as opposed to BuddyPress. Thanks!
This could be made into a plugin. Maybe everyone who needs it and wants it should pitch in to making the plugin. I'd be happy to help.
I just popped across this because I am building a website with the same exact needs. I have an event and need people to sign up as a volunteer and they also need to specify what type of volunteer they are (money collectors, food servers, etc).. and I will tell you the absolutely most PERFECT solution..
RoloPress - it's a theme/plugin collection built my SlipFire which lets you create a wordpress page where people can sign up as a user and add themselves as a volunteer. They can choose what type of volunteer and give all their contact info and then upon signup, instead of being sent to the wordpress dashboard they are sent to a page which you can hide from non-volunteers. On that page I had the volunteer list, a schedule, some downloadable files, and a few widget codes so people could grab an event widget for their own websites..
I have been singing the praises of RoloPress for a year now and they still have yet to let me down. I just recently found out that they are in the process of issuing a MAJOR upgrade in the coming weeks which is exciting..
Overall a GREAT plugin and works perfect for this.
Just posting to say that I'm also seeking a solution to this. Great idea. I looked at Rolopress, looks a bit more complicated than what I was picturing for this, but I'll give it a shot.
