We have tested this Pingpack idea on one of our Blogs and got many Spam Comments on it. We then put the Pingpacks to nofollow and this helped a lot to resolve the issue of Spaming.

MemberSo i'm guessing the major problem with this is spamming, i am constantly getting spammy comments that have no relevancy to any of my posts left of a daily basis, very very annoying !!!

MemberThere is actually only little one can do when it comes to spammy comments. I think incorporating facebook-like and twitter buttons on your site would be better because you tend to increase your social media reach by doing that.

MemberRemember pingbacks if shown to your users are a link and with default WordPress the link is nofollow which deletes the link benefit associated with the link.
This means if your site has a lot of pingbacks it's deleting a LOT of your sites link benefit with no benefit to you.
Basically pingbacks are going to damage your SERPs long term because they add nofollow links to your site!
